Official's Calls

Featured Replies

The refs thread was closed because part of it was taking a possible ugly turn but another possible turn the thread was taking is one I like. The ideas that Frances had on fans who are clueless about some calls refs make.

Which ones make you laugh when fans go nuts but have no clue what the rules are. Frances pointed out two good ones---the "Over and Back" at half court and the "5 Second" call.

My favorite is the block/charge call. It is a very difficult one but there could be the most obvious block or charge in the world and the fans who didn't get the call will go crazy. My favorite fan quote is "His/her feet weren't set", thinking that their feet must be set in concrete for a full second before a charge can be called.

Anyone else have some?

Frances, have anymore you would like to vent about?

Other misconceptions:

1. You have to get both feet back inbounds before you can touch the ball.

2. You can't rebound your own airball or its like its passing to yourself.

3. When a player dives for a ball and then slides, its traveling.

4. It can't be over-and-back because the defender tipped the ball.

There is no 5 second count in the backcourt.

Over the back. Can somebody please show me where these three words are together the the rule book?! People, there is nothing wrong with a player grabbing the ball from behind somebody!

3 seconds. Do people not realize that the 3 second count stops when a shot is put up or when there is no team control?!

Just a couple I hear on a nightly basis.

When you go over top of another player, its a foul. Nothing wrong with fighting for rebounds but you can't disrupt someones position. They have the spot and they spot they controll is from the floor to the ceiling. Thats the rule. If you go over the back, you illegaly take a spot they had position in. The 3 second count is suspended when a drive to the basket is made. If no attempt is made, and the player is still in the lane, 3 seconds should be called.

The point made about the "over the back" call is that , to the average Joe, ANYTIME someone from behind gets a rebound, they're yelling 'over the back'.

You have to be stationary when taking the ball out of bounds as on the playing floor. The new rule gives you a 3 feet area to move in.

I wish schools would give a copy of the rules to all the fans. It keeps me quiet knowing the rules. ;)

Obviously, Billy Packer didnt know this one when he called for traveling on Sparks against UL.

The biggest two that I see is are;

The "Over the Back". Firstly there is no such call. Secondly the call being made is a foul not a violation, meaning there must be sufficient contact to dislodge a player from a position on the floor that they have legally obtained. Minimal contact is ignored unless substantial advantage is gained.

The other is fans screaming for double dribble when the player muffs the ball and then legally dribbles. A player that does not catch a pass cleanly (muffs) and then picks the ball up off the floor (*not bounces it back up to themselves) has not yet used their dribble.

*If they bounce the ball back up then they have used their dribble.

How in the world did I forget this one? Heck, it happened last night. Tom Hammonds said that Sparks or Rondo(I forget which one) "got away with an obvious double dribble" in this exact situation.

Yeah! He got away with the obvious double dribble (NOT) and then made the three point play.

Announcers are typically not very well versed in the rules.

I think the problem arises here on whether the official feels it was a controlled dribble or a muff. The subjective part of this call leads to the fans screaming for a double dribble.

The other one I hear often is:

"Walk. He lifted his pivot foot."

Well, if the ball is still in his hands when a pivot is lifted completely up then its a walk. Here's an intesting note. It is IMPOSSIBLE to be traveling while maintaing a dribble. You can jump and run and scoot as long as you maintain dribble.
