I think he actually finished runner up for MVP twice with the Nets never actually won . If my memory serves me right. I thought he was robbed out of one . But I am biased because outside of MJ , Kidd has been my favorite NBA player. His handles and passing ability were fun to watch. Leader in the purest sense when on the floor.

 

If I ranked all time pgs Magic is obviously #1 and even though I despise him Isaiah is #2. Then from there you could bunch up Stockton , GP, Kidd and Nash.

 

You have some good players of recent vintage. GT would want you to remember Oscar. As a Knick fan, I want you to remember Walt Fraier. Throw in Tiny and Cousy. Is Allen Iveron a point? If you count him, he would vie for attention as well.

 

Kidd spanned some solid guys- think about the modern guys like Paul, Rose, Williams, Irving- where will Curry finish, where will Lillard wrap up his career? Are we willing to write off John Wall's career?

I don't consider Oscar a pg, more of a point forward. Also outside of the center position I'm biased against players who didn't at least play in the 80s. I think athleticism shot up from 80s on. I'm sure some of the current guys will replace people on my list but let's see how their careers unfold first.

Oscar and Magic were easily the best two PGs of alltime.

Yeah, I have to agree, but Magic started his own position, point forward. Which makes him in a class by himself in my book.

Stockton was the best PG I ever watched, but I'll surely agree on the latter.

 

Tough call, Stockton was awesome but he also had the Mail Man which certainly helped. Kidd was awesome though, certainly loved his game, type of guy that made everyone around him better.

My only problem with Stockton is what would he do today? All all alltime greats I think he would struggle as much as any in today's game.

I'm serious. Rose, Westbrook, Rondo. Big, athletic guards. CP3 is a hoss, Williams is big. He'd still have success, but his lax of athleticism would get exposed. He didnt exactly play in a golden era of Point Guards. His success coincided with the last years of Isiah's prime and Johnson's final years.

 

Athletically he'd be at a huge disadvantage. Some of the best athletes in NBA history and playing the point right now.

I love the history of the NBA but some of the guy that had success in the past would struggle to put up similar numbers in the league right now. Top to bottom the league has as much talent as ever.

Steve Nash is probably the best comparison among current guards to Stockton. I think Stockton in the right situation with the right coach would excel in today's game much the way Nash did in his prime. Much like Nash, his lack of athleticism may make him a liability defensively, but keep in mind that Stockton is the all time NBA leader in steals so I think he may show himself better defensively than Nash.

Very true and you may have a point. Nash was one of the greatest shooters in league history and the system fit him very well. However his heyday was still just before the major boom in point guard athleticism. Still effective just wonder how they'd do against Westbrook or Rose for a 7 game series.

Stockton didn't so much as go after his defender as he abused the defenders of his team mates. I seemed to always get the ball to players in open positions either standing wide open for a jumper or hitting a cutter going to the basket. He along with Nash in their primes would still be top point guards if they played today.
