He pitched all 7 for a complete game. He would not be eligible until tomorrow due to needing 3 days rest.

1-2 IP: 0 days rest

3-5 IP: 1 day rest

6 IP: 2 days rest

7-9 IP: 3 days rest

Congratulations to Dixie on the win. That is a fairy tale type of ending. If you wrote a story with a game ending that way, people would say it wasn't believable - but it happened.

 

To the Beechwood Tigers - what a great season! With freshmen hitting in the 1, 2 and 4 slots and several other freshmen and sophomores being key contributors, the future is very bright. To be that young and compile the second best record in the region at 28-9 and be one out away from the regional championship game - you shouldn't be disappointed despite the tough loss. Keep working and look forward to going even further next year.

 

Finally, a big shout out and congratulations to some seniors for their hard work, play on the field, leadership through a coaching transition and showing the young guys how to be mature leaders even though things may not have gone as well as each of you hoped for personally. I think we agree. I am not saying the ump favored Beechwood. I am suggesting that Beechwood put the ball in those spots way more often. Niehaus was efficient and more "in-the-(real)-zone". The benefit was that Dixie had to swing at those pitches because the ump was calling them. Hard to hit the outside pitch off the plate.

 

I was very confused about the batter interference call. No real attempt to throw, and I thought the batter (Elkus I think) stayed in his box.

That's why I am not a fan of the "swinging steel". The kid gets it in his head that he is indirectly trying to protect the runner and it seems more often than not, they end up leaning too much and get the interference call.

Sounds like I missed a great game, I have already been abolished from one school earlier this year by posting students going a bit wild so it is probably just as well I wasn't at this game.

I checked with some umps on an officials board I peruse and they all said there has to be an attempt to throw . Ball doesn't have to be released but the catcher does have to show that he is trying to throw. If the catcher simply stands up it can't be interference.

 

So when the above says "no real attempt to throw" what did the catcher do? Did he **** his arm to throw?

The catcher stood, took his arm back to throw, started to motion his arm forward briefly, then stopped as the batter was standing on top of home plate right in front of the catcher directly between the catcher and second base. If he would have attempted the throw, his arm and follow through would have almost certainly hit the batter. Based on your description of what was needed for it to be interference, the ump made the right call.

Thanks. That's different than what was stated earlier. Easy call by blue. The umpire that told TOG about "only having to be in the way" probably also assumed there was an attempt to throw.

It might have only been 3 innings, but he seemed to struggle a little and Boone hit him pretty well in I think the second. He threw quite a few pitches for 3 innings, at least it seemed like it.

 

The tough question is this, why wasn't Suchanek put in to pitch?, definitely one of the best pitchers in the region, he had only thrown 3 innings, there is no need to save him for the next game.... Now his next game will be with his summer team. The coach had several opportunities, even a trip to the mound... JMO
