May 23, 201313 yr By all accounts, UK is poised to have quite a year in 2013/14. They seem to have it all... amazing young talent, returning experience, depth and good coaching. With this in mind, how will UK fans judge this team this year? Clearly, a national championship will be judged as a success. How about achieving something that is less than a national title? Would UK fans consider a Final Four appearance a success? How about an SEC tournament title and losing in the Sweet 16?
May 23, 201313 yr I think they'll have to reach the Final Four for this season to be viewed as a success. Elite 8 is acceptable (to most). Anything less would be a disappointment.
May 23, 201313 yr Final Four or bust, anything else is a disappointment considering the hype. Anything can happen in the tournament, especially when you get to the Final Four, but this team has to be fighting for the title or it will be labled a failure. It's probably not right, but thats the Calipari effect on Kentucky basketball. Kentucky fans are going to go mad when he leaves because they need to realize this level of success (recruiting trail, hype, etc.) is something special and it will not be like this when he is gone.
May 23, 201313 yr Another thing is the last two seasons the favorite ended up winning the title. More often than not in college basketball, the best team doesn't always win. Will be interesting to see how it plays out, it's tough to go wire to wire and win it all in college basketball.
May 23, 201313 yr Author Is there any conceivable chance that UK could miss the tourney, like they did this past season?
May 23, 201313 yr Is there any conceivable chance that UK could miss the tourney, like they did this past season? If they can ride the bubble with this years mess, I believe they are in good shape to make it next year. You lose Nerlens, but you still replace him with a solid post guy. You lose Archie and Mays, but replace them with a couple of guys who are much better. Not to mention Randle and the others. Just don't see it in any lifetime.
May 23, 201313 yr At least Final 4. All of the UK detractors will be out in force for anything less than a title.
May 23, 201313 yr On paper they should reach the Final Four easily, but realistically I'm not sure how you can accurately judge the success or failure of such a freshman led team. Yes WCS, Poythress, and Wiltjer are back but they all under performed last year so that's not all that refreshing. Who's to say how everyone else will respond to the college game. We all thought they would be better last year and they weren't. It's a toss up though.

May 23, 201313 yr Anything less than the Final Four would be disappointing. Anything less than the Elite Eight is a complete and utter failure.

I think this is where I'm at. They need to make a Final Four. I think they should also win the SEC. Upsets happen all the time in the tournament though.
May 23, 201313 yr Final Four is a success, anything less is a letdown. As for missing the tournament completely.... I have a better chance of shacking up with Kate Upton than that.
May 23, 201313 yr For the Final Four or bust crowd....what if they play a 2 seed in the Elite 8 like Michigan State and then lose? Is the season still not a success? Disappointment isn't a good word. Would you not be disappointed if they lost in the championship game?

Would you not be disappointed if they lost in the championship game? As to part one, nope, not a success. As to the second part, of course UK fans would be disappointed in the outcome of the game, but the season as a whole would certainly (at least in my eyes) be seen as a successful one.
