All-A Interest in your Region or Area? Up, Down, the Same?

Featured Replies

I agree Whodey!! Everyone in the 10th is playing for second. With Brossart in it.

BGGreen you are right they did not win their first til 2001, but they have won 5 of the last 6. When you have the resources they have they sould be winning at that clip. I'm not putting them down at all. I hope they represent the 10th well at Richmond. But right now it's not much fun being a small school in the 10th when you have the Big Green Machine mowing every one down by 30 plus points.

I think the Second Region has the Tiger Woods effect. Most people check in to see if UHA (Tiger) wins, and most people root for the underdog, who rarely wins. UHA is 45-4 in 2nd Region All-A Tourmament games so there isn't much drama in the tournaments.

The all a is much bigger in rural areas of the state than the more populated areas. The Sherman neace Atheletic Center in Hazard was absolutely packed two nights in a row, many people standing. The place was almost full an hour before tipoff Saturday. The kids cried, winners and losers both, and the fans were passionate and into the games just like at the regional at the end of the year. Going to Richmond is like going to town for most of us in Lee County, much easier trip than to Hazard Thursday

They have built a strong program for a school with 330 kids (grades 10-12). Boys in grades 10-12 total about 130. Not one kid playing from out of district. This school competes the right way. Hard work. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

I don't want to turn this into a how many schools should be in the All-A thread.

I want to know if the "charm" or "buzz" of the All-A has peaked in your region or at the state level or is it still building or maintaining a high level.

The reason I seek the answer is that if classification would ever come to basketball I wonder if we would see the same results whatever they may be.

Understand your point Whodey, but don't penalize the program for it's success!! Paris has won 4 and finished 2nd 6 times since 1990, so I'm sure they'll be back;and St. Pat's and Bracken have had success, and have very young teams.

By the way, what "resources"; the spacious 700 seat gym, or the other "state of the art" athletic facilities?? :D

I'm guessing the enthusiam comes and goes based on the competitiveness of the region. No arguing that the crowds, etc. are better when the outcome is in doubt. As with all competition, it runs in cycles; and the excitement of watching an underdog make a run like St. Patricks just did in the 10th region, is what the All "A" is all about!!

It appears in football, or any of the "classified" sports for example, the excitement is still intact, despite the domination of certain institutions year in, year out!!

Actually in football the interest is high in each class and I wonder if it because there were always classes.

I'm not saying the All-A interest is on the decline (that's why I started the thread), but it seems like states like Indiana had a hard time maintaining interest in all the classes going from one champ to multiple champs. I know the All-A isn't the same because KY will still have a single state champ this year, and I'm guessing if the playoffs were held like in football there would be high interest.

Im not penalizing Brossart at all. Not only have they proved themselves in the some what weak 10 region, look what they do down in the all "A" state tournament. They can compete and have a shot to win this year.

I'm assuming you're refering to the "A" schools when you call the 10th "somewhat weak"; otherwise I'd beg to differ??

Yes the All "A" schools. Otherwise the 10th region is loaded

Interest is up in the 5th this year, as Bardstown has both their women and men in the tourney. 5th's small teams have gotten much better with the emergence of Caverna this century, to add to Campbellsville, Fort Knox, and a couple of others.

Our Brossart Mustangs have earned their stripes.

The competition among A schools in the 10th, with the exception of Brossart, is just down right now.

It certainly wasn't when Chez Marks (33 vs BBHS in '98) plyed his trade for Paris or Adam Reed, Tucker and Day played at Bracken County or Ike Poe and Jordan Owens at St. Patrick.

Timing being everything Brossart is up right now and there are no Marks', Reeds', (Jordan)Owens', Chad McCarters' or Jimmy Horstmans' out there right now - they all seem to be at Brossart right now - and will still be there again next year.

In addition to having talent we also have excellent coaching, conditioning, support, and great human beings who comprise the program (all of who come from our six district feeder parishes).

There were years when our girls program made the trek every year and the boys stayed home.

So - as they say - Everything that goes around comes around!!!!

The other 10th Region teams will be back. Right now I think that the 10th Region should be happy that they have the Mustangs representing them in Richmond or it might not be very pretty.

Incidentally, I thought that the semi-finals and finals of the 10th Region "A" were very well attended at the Campbell County Middle School this past weekend - Bracken County really turned out on Friday night - didn't look to me like they thought they were playing for second place.
