(Reuters) - Police at Maryland's Towson University will increase their campus presence at night, the university said on Tuesday, after a group calling itself the White Student Union promised its own patrols to curb what it sees as rising black-on-white crime.

 

The White Student Union has been drawing attention since one of its members defended segregation during a panel discussion earlier this month at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), an influential forum in Republican Party politics.

 

"We might as well step up and be a part of the solution," Heimbach said. "What we see is unfortunately ... every time the offender is a black male usually between 18 and 25."

 

A February 28 blog post on the group's website entitled "Black Crime Wave Continues!" said: "Every single day black predators prey upon the majority white Towson University student body."

 

The Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights group, placed the organization on its list of hate groups, and students raised concern the patrols would make the campus less safe by increasing racial tension.

Apparently this is an issue for some time and goes back to a group creating a Black Student Union. I would suspect present rhetoric aside that this White Student Union may be some backlash from those other efforts. The administrations appropriate response to the BSU's requests for funds and facilities to their group was denied based on the goal of the University to integrate all groups. I would hope they would similarly deny any other color's groups to segregate.

 

If statistics bear out the crime activity...then protections to students should be offered regardless of race, affiation, etc. and the perpetrators should be captured and punished along those same lines.

If there is no recent data as to crime statistics and race, how can they claim that every time the offender is black and 18 to 25?

Maybe if they left out the "Black Crime Wave" part and the "Black Predators" part then they wouldn't be labeled a hate group. If I was an 18-25 year old black male at Towson University I guarantee that I would be targeted as I stroll the campus minding my own business with no intentions of hurting anyone. Their whole approach to the "crime wave" is wrong and inciteful.

In the link the Black Student Union is claiming that crime went down in 2012 from 2011.

^ If they wanted to start a watch program that aided campus police in pinpointing dangerous areas and protecting the student population, then that's what they'd do. Instead, they did this.

I personally do not like any groups that are based on black, white, or race, but it is America and special interest seems to be the way of the land. I find this no different than any of those groups, sometimes the folks get bold, and say things that are inappropriate. Remember the black panther group that called for violent action during the Trayvon Martin controversy?

And last I saw no one supported or backed that group except for like minded radicals. The claim that many blacks such as myself wanted to make clear is that these guys are not the same Black Panther Party from the 60s and 70s.

A good friend of mine who is black and I had a similar conversation on facebook the other day. He feels like colleges similar to Towson University never had the intention of helping black people and that black people shouldn't be asking them for help in things allowing Black Student Unions to form and watch groups to help solve the issue of black males entering college but not finishing. That whole topic is for another thread but I did want to point out that there are many blacks who feel like my friend does and they are like you. They don't want groups based on their color either. The difference is that they want to separate completely and form their own schools. Their thinking is that they never wanted help us anyways so don't try to help us now.
