Cant do that.

Yes you can. It should be a blocking foul everytime. It should only be an offensive foul if the offensive player pushes off. Other than that it should be a blocking foul.

That disadvantages a good defensive player in legal guarding position. How is that fair to a good defender ?

The call last night in the Purdue/IU game in Bloomington caused both Swanigan and Bryant to foul out at a pivotal point in the game. It was awful.....just awful.

I will say after watching this over and over the 3rd referee was in a position to assert an opinion and should have cast the deciding vote.

Where the play happened, I'd like to see the baseline official's call overrule since it is technically his call. Play originated right in front of him. To me, he had the best angle.

Folks, this is why coaches and players get technical fouls. That was an embarrassment

Now we're worried about what is fair to a good defender? When I played I took pride in my defense. I slid my feet and worked hard to make the offensive player uncomfortable. I played passing lanes, gambled on occasion and would use my long arms to try to take your rock. I also drew charges like they were supposed be drawn. I beat you to the spot, made my body perfectly still and took one for the team. When I played that was a charge. Nowadays a player can be in the air and a defender can slide under them before they land and get a charge called. Nowadays a 130 pound kid can go up for a layup and a 250 pound kid can act like he got shot and flop all over the place and a charge will be called. If common sense wants to be applied to a charge call like it was back in the day then I'm fine.

I played during the hand checking age. You put a hand on an offensive player these days and it is a foul. Basketball quit being fair to good defenders a decade ago but kids suck at playing defense these days anyways. Flopping, reaching and poor attempts at blocking shots is all I see anyways. Hell, kids let each other shoot wide open layups these days. We at least challenged layups back in the days. Nobody truly cares about defense anymore.

Disagree....it was exactly in between lead and slot primary coverage area...I will agree that it originated from Lead and the error here, in my opinion, was both officials coming out with a call and not a clock stoppage mechanic. I also think that the slot should have let Lead take it all the way...

Trail official should not have been looking at that play....not at all in his primary coverage area. BTW folks, it's not a "vote", it's a discussion on what was seen at the time of the event.

We are ALWAYS about what is fair to both defender and offensive player. Officiate the defense...the rest takes care of itself.

Most of what you described is neither legal guarding position nor good defense....I get what you are saying about past years', I appreciate that for what it was...but Naismith started with a peach basket and we didn't keep that either.....

I'm not talking about the officials. I'm talking about the way the rules of the game have changed. Officials call what they are instructed to call and that's fine. I just don't like it when it comes to the way charges are called. The way they are called is an advantage to the defender and that disgusts me. The rules shouldn't be an advantage to the offense or defense but with the exception of hand checking any good player with an above average basketball IQ should excel on defense. I know I would. I'd be the greatest 5'10 post defender in KHSAA history because I'd let you shoot a layup and would let you land on me on your way down. Charge!!! No basket!!!

I thought "Blarge" was the female nobody wanted to take home from the club?!?!

"Please tip your waiters on the way out!" :walk:

A good pre-game among the officials could help in preventing this from happening!
