Remove the rule and the whole game changes to a power game controlled by size/strength with little room for the physically inferior athlete. Give the ball to old guys like James Lee on the move and no defender would have a chance.

in total agreement with this. We already have seen the game trend towards 'either shoot the 3 or go all-out to the rim, 3's or layups or fouls going for layups are all we want'. If I were still coaching this would certainly be my approach. The reward-to-risk ratio for doing this now outweighs mid-range or post play by quite a bit.

I love seeing the defense rewarded for being in position and staying on their feet. Take that away completely and I agree with you, game changes significantly and not in a good way.

I like the more generic 'advantage gained' concept mentioned earlier here, reduce the need to see the high-speed detail of what might have actually happened (with defender's feet, when player jumped, etc.) and assess the general perception of the play. Which player was in control, in a good position, was making an attempt to score vs. just trying to draw contact (offensive version of the 'flop'), things like that. In theory, anyway. No clue if it could be administered.
