Define "pushes off."

Up to the ref's discretion as everything is.

So a shoulder to the sternum on a drive to the basket could be a push off?

You see where I'm going here?

Sure. If the ref wants to call it like that.

Yeah. I see where you're going but it doesn't change my thought process any. The charge is a stupid meaningless call and nothing you can say will change my opinion of it. Eliminate the charge. Quit penalizing offensive players for not being able to control where they land once they are airborne.

So you're advocating just for airborne players?

I'm advocating for all players on offense not using their body to create an advantage. If the offensive player isn't using their body to create and advantage then it is either a foul on the defense or a no call. It's easy to see when an offensive player pushes off with hands, arms, shoulders, butt, knees, elbows, etc. if that doesn't happen then it isn't an offensive foul. That is what I am advocating for.

It just proves how objectionable the game of basketball is. I get from our referee members there is a process to administer the blarge and that is handled correctly. It is just as a spectator, I do not support this gray area, I want it to be one or the other, never both simultaneously.

And for the record, I could never be a referee and am certain you guys don't make enough money.

So if a defensive player is standing at the free throw line on a break away and the offensive player runs over him on the way to the basket, defensive player doesn't move, it's a foul on the defense or a no call?

In this scenario common sense applies and as I stated earlier it is an offensive foul if an offensive player uses his body to gain an advantage. In this situation that you described it would be the offensive player using his body to gain an advantage therefore it would be an offensive foul.

You just described how it's worded today.

That makes the problem with charge calls squarely on the officials making the call then.

How so?

I live charges and love players that sacrifice their body to take them. I took a lot as a player and got pretty good at it.

A player in the air can't control where he lands. A defender shouldn't be allowed to slide into a player's landing space and draw the charge.

I took them all of the time too. And didn't have to flop to get the call. It's not like how it used to be. Way too easy to draw a charge these days. You used to really be sacrificing your body. Now you just have to be a good actor.

The rule book does not allow a defender to slide in after the start of the shot.
