Have you ever watched Warren Central? In basketball or even football? They are athletic.

 

I watched Warren Central play Johnson Central at Mercer Co. this year. They did look relatively athletic, but nowhere near Trinity or Madison Central. Probably more along the lines of Christian Co and Bryan Station.

 

Have the Dragons improved a lot since I saw them in December? I know they have some nice wins over Russell Co., Bowling Green (x3), and Henderson Co. since that time.

I can't believe no one else is talking about this team. I guess very few on here have watched them this year, but when I saw them I was highly impressed. I think Majors is a top 10 player in the state, Matlock is a tremendous young talent, and Elam and Edwards are both very nice players as well. They have a great draw, and should be heavy favorites to make the semifinals. I believe they will be a very difficult challenge for whomever comes out of the top quarter.

 

I think a lot of people are expecting to see Hopkinsville in Saturday night's first game...

And Russell County beat Madison Central two weeks ago.

 

In my mind the Warren Central/Montgomery County game is the most appealing in the first round. I think it could go either way.

Central rarely plays well in holiday tourneys. The year they won state, went to the KOB and got handled by Apollo. Came into Rupp and dismantled that same Apollo team. It turned into a dunk contest in the final quarter. You can't judge Warren Central by their performances in holiday tournaments.

 

On side note, I love that Central gets overlooked by many come State Tourney time, each and every year. They have shown in there 9 trips to Rupp that they are more than capable of competing with the best of the best in the state on the biggest stage.

No small schools in this year's tournament. Smallest school is Knott Central (606).

 

Average enrollment of the 16 schools is 1,149 students.

 

Of the four unclassed state tournaments held this year (boys basketball, boys and girls soccer, and volleyball), there have been five Class A-size schools (600 students or less) advance to the state tournament.

Great point. I was just telling some friends and family of mine yesterday about this years set up. Using the football class system, the smallest classification of any school is 3A (three of them, Knott County Central, Fleming County and Wayne County).

 

Of the 16 teams, using the football class system it goes like this:

 

6A- 3

5A- 8

4A- 2

3A- 3

 

West of I-75 there is only ONE region champ that is below 5A, and that's Wayne County (3A).

Their lesson? It was a scheduling conflict with UK and I'm guessing this was the best alternative given the circumstances. I'd rather see it in Rupp on a Sunday than in another arena with the old format on a Saturday.

It has been played when UK was in session many times in the past decade (I remember having to miss some games for classes at UK on at least 2 separate years). I think pushing it a week ahead probably had more to do with Rupp hosting NCAA second and third (previously first and second) round games.

UK was already scheduled to play Florida at noon at Rupp Arena on Saturday March 9. I'm thinking any UK game will take precedence over the Sweet 16.

The NCAAs are at Rupp the normal weekend if I remember correctly.

I wish it was a Monday night instead of Sunday. I always did think it was unfair for the team who played the 2nd game on Saturday to turn around and play Sat night.
