Grant loses to WV 74-28 on December 17th. A beating that borders on unecessary but you could argue now that it probably helped Grant.

 

One of the biggest turnarounds or upsets I can remember in this area in a long time.

 

Congrats to Grant and nice run for WV. I was looking forward to watching another SK/WV District final but that's why they play the game. Going on memory but I think Grant pulled off an upset back in 2007 in the Districts at Walton over Walton. That was the last time Walton wasn't in the finals- memory based.

 

In this video, love how the Grant coach talks about the anatomy of an upset. I would love to hear what that was made up of.

What a game. Congrats to Coach West and his staff. They had their kids ready to play and have made huge strides with these young ladies.

Good game plan with solid defense led to a poor shooting performace by Walton's bigs. Billie Hern had a big night. I would say that she possibly had 6 or so blocks.

Molly Clinkenbeard played a very solid game for the Bearcats. Sandlin and Judy were non factors in this game with Judy getting in early foul trouble then picking up her 3rd early in the 3rd qtr. Missed free throws and a late over and back call opened the door for Grant Co.

Walton's shots did just not fall tonight and too many missed layups.

 

Congrats to Walton Verona on a great run over the last few years. Back to Back Regional Champs, District Champs, All "A" Region Champs, All "A" State Champs. Those girls played theirs butts off and deserve every bit of credit for their accomplishemnts.

I'm sure there are several coaches who would disagree with this statement. Last night, Coach West and his staff were the best. They had their girls ready to play, had a solid game plan and made the in-game adjustments that led them to the win. Didn't see that on the other side.

Even more amazed when I went back and looked at the Grant record on the KHSAA website. Grant County had lost 6 of its last 8 games including a loss to Williamstown on January 21st.

Not really. Make offensive adjustments and use other options. Heck, if Sandlin and Judy were 4 for 23, they hurt the team more than they helped. Maybe take them out and use some other players to see if they could have given Walton a spark.

The presence of a 6 ft athlete like Hearn can make you shoot 4 for 23. I was not at the game, but I am sure that Coach Clinkenbeard used more than 5 players. He used 9 against Gallatin, so I assume he used at least 8 against Grant. That spark probably had many chances to prove itself, but did not on this night.

I don't know that I would subscribe to the theory of sitting your two best players on the bench.

i was at the game. They had good looks at the basket. They did not make the shots. Coach Clink and Sully got them to the right spots but they cannot shoot the ball for them. It was just one of those nights. Hearn was a big difference tonight. She showed up to play. Grant Co. would have won a lot more games this year if she would have come to play every night like she did last night.

Just because you are All Region does not put you above a wake up call of some time on the pine because you are not performing. Sometimes, a few minutes on the bench is all it takes to turn things around and light a fire. And yes, no disrespect to you, but coaches do it all the time. In a WIN or go home game this could possibly keep you from going home.
