February 7, 201313 yr Not to mention the Raiders and Sebastian Jangkfutehwoapkimckowski are in scoring position at midfield, it's definitely not something the point-starved Raiders would vote for. Classic
February 8, 201313 yr Field position my friend. I know there isn't the same number of plays, but the value of having good special teams is a game-changer like have a good offense or a good defense. Teams adjust to other teams that have great return men. Look at Devin Hester, Leon Washington, Reggie Bush, etc. Teams purposely kick the ball out of bounds when facing these guys to preserve better field position for their defense. It is, I agree. But special teams are not 1/3 of the game, that was my point. It's not as much of the game as everyone seems to think. I would say that if all kicking except punting was eliminated, no one would miss it in a very short time.
February 8, 201313 yr Not true. You are speaking of situations where teams play for field goals. Without field goals in the equation the entire game changes. There are situations now with field goals where teams are going for hail marys at the end of the game. It is absolutely true. If a team only has to defend the end zone and not worry about a kick tying or winning the game you will see far fewer games tied or won on the last drive. It totally changes the strategy at the end of the game.
February 8, 201313 yr Or at least make it the old school drop kick with one of the players on the field like Rugby. That would be cool. And for those too lazy to read, punting is fair game. The punter is often a very good athlete having to make an athletic play of catching footballs high, low, or skipping... guys are running at you, angle kicks. There is strategy involved with punting. Theres plenty of strategy with field goals and kick offs as well.
February 8, 201313 yr Think of the drama in the field goal. It's an extremely tense play if a game is on the line. Don't tell me kickers aren't athletes. Lawrence Tynes kicked a rock hard frozen football 48 yards in Green Bay in the NFC Championship game. Longest field goal in the playoffs at Lambeau field ever and it was in freezing temps. You think the ball should have been in Favre's hands? It was. He threw an INT. Field goals are fun. Not much better than seeing the ball go through the up rights to send your team to the Super Bowl.
February 8, 201313 yr Or instead of taking a knee 3 plays to kick a FG you have teams that have to go for it. The whole "It's part of the game and has been part of the game forever" does not necessarily mean it is right. FG kicking as it is today has evolved in to being a specialty position, it was not always "part of the game" in how you see it today. A punter is a specialty position as well, why don't you want to get rid of them?
February 8, 201313 yr I think it's stupid that "a kicker might lose it" is an argument for getting rid of a kicker/field goals. I also think eliminating the kick off is stupid. The game is fine the way it is.

It totally changes the strategy at the end of the game. Exactly. Instead of a team being down 2 points with the ball and 2 minutes left at their 20 and driving 40-50 yards for a field goal they have to set up to drive the whole 80 yards. That's much more entertaining to me than watching a team drive that far in 2 plays and then run off a minute to call timeout with 3 seconds left to kick the field goal.
February 8, 201313 yr A punter is a specialty position as well, why don't you want to get rid of them? Because games aren't won or lost by their foot on the last play of the game.
February 8, 201313 yr Because games aren't won or lost by their foot on the last play of the game. Could be if they screw up on a punt at the end of the game. Couple of years ago a giants punter punted it to Desean Jackson at the end of the game. Coughlin wanted him to kick it out of bounds. Jackson returned it for a TD and the Eagles won. All because of a stupid punter.

It's the punter's fault the other 10 guys on the field couldn't make the tackle?
February 8, 201313 yr It's the punter's fault the other 10 guys on the field couldn't make the tackle? It's the punters fault he kicked the ball inbounds. I thought that was clear. My point is, a punter who is usually undrafted and low paid, can make a huge impact on the game. They do less than kickers...why not can them too?
February 9, 201313 yr Exactly. Instead of a team being down 2 points with the ball and 2 minutes left at their 20 and driving 40-50 yards for a field goal they have to set up to drive the whole 80 yards. That's much more entertaining to me than watching a team drive that far in 2 play s and then run off a minute to call timeout with 3 seconds left to kick the field goal. You are ignoring the point that I'm making. You act like those final drives will be much more exciting without field goals--it will likely be the exact opposite. If an NFL defense knows that the offense has to go 80 yards in a short time and all they have to defend is the end zone the chances of the offense succeeding becomes very small. You would see far fewer lead changes/ties inside of the last two minutes of the game. It would give the defense a huge advantage, not only in the last 2 minutes but any time a team gets a 2 score lead in the 4th quarter.
February 9, 201313 yr People would be for this until their team needed a score to win a game and couldn't get it. If you want to improve offense and scoring in the NFL limit FGs to 2 points per make. If you want a get a little crazier add the 3 point (PAT attempt) from the 5 or 10 yard line. If it is simply because people don't like seeing FGs decide games, I'd argue that games are decided long before that. I'll never believe that one call or play has that much of an impact. What about the defense allowing the offense to get into FG range. How about we hold the losing team responsible for giving up field position?
