February 6, 201313 yr Author A point should be made that kickers are not the only players who can screw up the end of a game. A highly paid QB can throw a late INT, a RB can fumble at the 1 yd line, a WR can have a key drop, or a CB should have a pass interference penalty that leads to an opponent's score. Kickers add flavor to the game. Yes, they are irritating nutcases. But, field goals (and extra points) are part of football scoring strategy. Football without kicking would be a different game IMO (not good or bad, but different). I think it is great to see a QB work a two minute drill to go downfield and get his team in position to tie the game and send it into overtime. I like the overtime changes taking the one possession FG winning kick out of play (although I would prefer something like what college and high school does). Somebody should do a beta test and start a league without kicking. See how it is received. I think it go over like a cake that looks good, but is missing an ingredient. Maybe, or it could be more exciting because teams would go for it more often like we do in Madden.

February 6, 201313 yr I lost my last HS game because of our kicker, the kid couldn't hit XPs! Kill the kicker!!!!
February 6, 201313 yr The strategy of the game would change. I hate seeing teams play for the field goal. That would never happen again. Kill the kicker!!!!

Or at least make it the old school drop kick with one of the players on the field like Rugby. That would be cool. And for those too lazy to read, punting is fair game. The punter is often a very good athlete having to make an athletic play of catching footballs high, low, or skipping... guys are running at you, angle kicks. There is strategy involved with punting.
February 6, 201313 yr Did you read the article? It is more about FG kickers. The kickoff thing is going to happen at some point. I did read the article and I don't care if Skip Bayless thinks place kickers are a waste or as he says "The lowest paid player on the field" Who cares? It's part of the game and has been part of the game forever. FG's play a huge role in the outcome of many games and I see no reason at all to get rid of it. Think about some of the greatest games and you take the FG out of it and what do you have? You have a game going on and on into 4-5-6-7-8 overtimes maybe and then what do you get? You get a lot more players hurt because they are tired and when you are exhausted more injuries happen. As far as the kickoff, change some of the rules, allow players on the recieving team to block a man from behind if that will save some huge collision. Even talking about getting rid of the place kicker is idiotic at best.

So explain to me what the difference in having a drop kick or a FG in Skip Baylesses mind whom you agree with. a football being kicked through "2 poles" is still the same thing and can decide a game.

The whole "It's part of the game and has been part of the game forever" does not necessarily mean it is right. FG kicking as it is today has evolved in to being a specialty position, it was not always "part of the game" in how you see it today.
February 6, 201313 yr Would it really make the game more exciting? Look at how defenses would change at the end of games if the field goal was not a factor. If you're up by 1-3 points at the end of a game and the other team has to go 80 yards with no timeouts left and under a minute to play the game would pretty much be over. Now the defense has to worry about the other team getting into field goal range so they can't just back completely off. If you take the field goal out of the equation you would end up with a lot of 40 yard hail marys on the last play of the game with the entire defense in the end zone. How many times does that play work? Once a season or so?

Shoot the game has changed so much that a defender can't even breath on a receiver (unless the last 2 minutes of a Super Bowl Game) or he'll get a flag. The game has changed so much with the rules changes that just 20 years ago a QB completing over 50% of his passes he was considered among the best in the game, now if you complete less than 60% you are a bum. So lets do away with the forward pass and just run between the tackles for 60 minutes, that's a real mans game.

There are situations now with field goals where teams are going for hail marys at the end of the game.

February 6, 201313 yr Special teams in all honesty make up a 1/3 of the game. That actually is a long held misconception. Special teams account for a third "phase" of the game but not a third of the game. In the Super Bowl for example there were 130 offensive plays, 5 field goals, 6 punts, 6 extra points and 12 kick offs. 29/159 plays is 18% of the game using the Superbowl as an example. While exciting it isn't as much of the game as most people think.
