Football or Basketball?

Featured Replies

That is question. How well do the two programs coexist at your school? Does one dominate the other in drawing power and prestige? Are football players contributing to the basketball program at your school? Are Basketball players contributing to the football program?

At Bell Co. the 2 programs coexist fairly well....... however football is the dominant sport with basketball taking a backseat.

Very few basketball players play football...... however each year you have a few football players who play basketball. The football players contribute big time to the basketball program, and it could be argued that most of the time the football players are the best players on the basketball team.

Occasionally football and basketball clash however..... and this is usually when football players choose not to play basketball. This has happened this year with several of the basketball/football teams best players choosing to focus their attention in the weightroom to prepare for football.

It's much the same at Clay. I don't think at this time that one is more dominant than the other. I do know that we have a very good cycle of both sport athletes coming up. Our coaches seem to be talking and working together to make both sports as successful as possible. IMO coaches and parents should encourage these kids to play both if that's what they want. I really believe that one sport enhances their ability to play the other. Year round, one sport athletes should be for the O. J. Mayo's of the world and quite frankly, there's not many of those around.

I totally agree! I think being multi sport in high school is important, and that doing so really compliments the sports you play. I dont neccessarily think it has to be basketball and football...... but playing football and running track.... or playing baseball and football....... or some combination of the sort really helps HS athletes become better competitiors and players. Almost all your big time college recruits are multi sport athletes.

At Morgan County they exist very well. Players play both. 5 of top 7 players for Morgan Co. basketball start on the gridiron as well.

Both programs support each other very well.

Coache's egos become a problem. Some really worry too much about what people think of them. They want to be little Pitinos or smaller versions of Bear Bryant, instead of thinking of the athlete.

Football doesn't exsist at St. Henry so they coexist well.

As I am sure is the case with many Class A schools, Bardstown's football team players make up 67% of their basketball team. Brain Calhoun, starting QB/CB, is also their star guard. Josh Payne, FS, is also starting guard. Eliot Mattingly, OT/DT, is the center.

At the Class A schools, I think they kids play Football,Basketball, Baseball, drive the bus, cut the grass, etc.......... A benefit of playing at a small school is you can enjoy playing 3 sports or more and most of the time you get a lot of playing time. I had the opportunity to go to a 3A school in the 7th grade and chose to stay Class A. Played in over 120 varsity basketball games, over half as a starter. Started 2 yrs in football and 4 yrs in baseball. There are trade offs.

I dont neccessarily think that changes at the 3A or 4A level. If you are good enough to start on one team you are usually good enough, although this isnt always true, to start on another team.

I know a kid at the 4A level who started QB for the football team for 4 years, started PG for the basketball team for 2 years, and started short stop and pitcher for the baseball team for 3 years.

I know at Bell alot of kids have started on both the basketball and football team.

Well, you have to be a very good athlete to do what that guy did at the 4a level..... I am just saying only a select few can do this. Many kids sit the bench on bigger schools when the Class A schools would love to have them and they could probably start there. Its a numbers thing really.

Now that I look back on my High School Basketbal career its a 50/50 thing... if I would have moved to the 3A school, I would have probably been 6th or 7th man on 2 regional championship teams.... didnt know that in the 7th grade but now I look back , I would have liked to have played in Rupp in any role. Oh well, coulda woulda shoulda....

If St.Henry ever did get a football program that would greatly hurt there stronghold on cross country.

At Holy Cross its no secret that Basketball is the number one sport. Mainly because most alumni don't feel associated with the football team, because its so new. Alot of people feel as if the whole football program has formed its own little new group inside of HC.

But mainly until HC football wins something they will always be behind basketball, they might even be behind baseball and soccer at HC right now also.

At Paintsville and other small schools, they co-exist well, because each team depends mostly on the same talent pool! And for a school their size, Paintsville has had remarkable success in football, basketball and baseball. The Tigers have state championships in both basketball and baseball and have a final showing as runner-up in football.

I think coach Marksberry and coach Steiner have a good relationship. Josh Elbert is a starter on the hoops squad, and the starting QB in the fall and I believe they have a few more football players on the hardwood.
