10 Notes From The 10th Region (Reviewing Week 8)

1) For the umpteenth time this season the Montgomery County Indians stole the 10th Region spotlight this week. Happy Osborne's 19-3 team participated in the Toyota Classic at Scott County & came away with an impressive championship run. The Indians started the tournament by making quick work of 9th Region foe Dixie Heights on Thursday. Friday saw Montgomery outscore Collins 22-5 in the fourth quarter, turning a five point deficit into a twelve point victory. And then during Saturday's championship the Indians overwhelmed a second 9th Region opponent, the Covington Catholic Colonels, by a score of 77-67. The region's top team has now won 8 consecutive games & 11 of their last 12. The winning streak will be put to the test in the Montgomery's only game this week--a Saturday showdown with state power Trinity in Mt. Sterling.

2) Omar Prewitt was named MVP of the Toyota Classic, with his absurdly outstanding tourney averages of 27.6 ppg & 14.6 rpg. But the 6'5" senior isn't a one-man show for the Indians. Happy Osborne has the luxury of four players averaging double figures in scoring. After Prewitt (22.2) there is junior guard Bryan Wallace (16.2), junior wing Darius Jones (10.7), & senior guard Tyler Jones (10).

3) As they were expected to do, the Bishop Brossart Mustangs took care of business in the Class "A" Tournament in Carlisle last week. The 'Stangs had no trouble at all in their first three games, dominating Calvary Christian, Nicholas County, & St. Patrick. The title game was a different story, however, as pesky Augusta refused to go away. But in the end, it was too much Justin Saunders, as the senior scored 28 points (12-17 FG's, 4-6 FT's), grabbed 7 rebounds & handed out 4 assists en route to a 78-68 win. The 6'2" swingman was rewarded by being named to the All-Tournament team, along with junior twin tower teammates Drew Burns & Alex Trentman. The 'Stangs also got solid play out of senior point guard Ben Uebel & junior forward Erik Rieger. Mike Code & company will compete in this week's All "A" State tourney on Thursday, going up against Louisville Collegiate (11-6). The Mustangs will undoubtedly be among the tourney favorites.

4) For a second straight week there seems to be improvement with Scott. The Eagles were 2-1 last week, with two of three games coming against 9th Region opponents. On Monday Josh Felts scored 23 points to lead in an 81-59 victory over Boone County. On Thursday the Eagles very nearly handed Holmes its first loss of the season, but the Bulldogs hung on to a 60-59 win. On Saturday the Eagles had no trouble at all in putting away George Rogers Clark. This week, a showdown with Campbell County looms on Tuesday, in addition to a Saturday afternoon neutral court contest with Perry County Central.

5) After two losses last week, Mason County has now dropped 4 of its last 6. The Royals also hosted Holmes, but fell short 59-50. It was the Friday night loss that stung. The Royals entered the fourth quarter at Pendleton County ahead by 9 points, but the Wildcats went on separate runs of 10-0 & 12-0 during the final frame. When the dust settled Ed Cravens' squad had earned a hard-fought 62-59 victory. Mason Monroe & Aaron Gibson, both senior guards, combined to score 42 of Pendleton's 62 points. Monroe scored 20 of his 24 points in the 2nd half.

6) Larry Kendall's Harrison County Thorobreds won a pair of games last week. After the Tuesday game with Campbell County was postponed, the Breds pounded Bourbon County on Friday night (81-47) & squeaked by South Laurel on Saturday (71-70). The Breds will play three games in four days this week, hosting Woodford County on Tuesday, visiting Campbell County on Wednesday & then a District showdown at rival Pendleton County on Friday.

7) Augusta gave the best it could in last week's Class "A" Tournament, which was enough for an expected runner-up finish. After putting away Paris in the quarterfinals & Bracken County in the semi-finals, the Panthers went toe-to-toe with Bishop Brossart & hung tough in the title game. The Panthers took a one-point lead in the third quarter, but the 'Stangs rattled off an 18-2 run and led by as many at 16. Jason Hinson's team cut that lead down to four points, but could never get it to within one possession. The eventual 10-point loss was tough for the Panthers, who had the Class "A" championship as a goal all season.

8) Brent Bach did his part in helping Augusta try to reach its goal of a Class "A" title. In the Panthers' three tournament games, the junior guard totaled 101 points & 57 rebounds, which averages out to 33.6 ppg & 19 rpg. But the standout guard certainly wasn't alone. Senior Tanner Kelsch, a 6'0 forward, averaged 14.6 ppg in the three tourney games. The efforts of both young men earned them spots on the Class "A" All-Tournament Team.

9) It has been a frustrating season for Bourbon County, who thus far has accumulated a record of 4-14. The Colonels started the season 2-1 & have since lost 11 of 13 games. The lone bright spot for Robert Goodman's team has been the play of junior guard Snoop Johnson. Johnson had a pair of 25 point scoring performances this week in losses to Frankfort & Harrison County.

10) Inconsistency continues to be the main theme for Campbell County. The Camels fell 56-52 at Highlands on Thursday night, the fourth loss in five games. The team was able to rebound, earning a home win vs. Nicholas County on Saturday. The Camels have two shots at redemption on consecutive days this week, visiting Scott on Tuesday night before hosting Harrison County on Wednesday.

Keep up the great work! Must admit I find myself checking your updates even if I'm at the game.

Reminds me of when I used to turn down the volume on televised UK games and listen to Cawood's perspective on the radio.

That's a personal favorite of mine as well. I started it as a goof-off when Bach hit about a 35-footer at Pendleton County. Then he started hitting at least one of those every game, so it became fun to do the landmark thing.
