I agree with this, but it seems to me like an imaginary girlfriend is more easily discovered than a fraudulent one.

I think I might start confessing to stuff I'm thinking about doing tonight. It's like a hall pass.

I heard a story about this guy I know who had a imaginary friend robot. The guy was also hardcore addicted to heroine. Maybe Te'o is addicted to heroine.

I spent so much time reading about this yesterday I'm about done with it. It's the only reason I haven't been in on this. But... here I am.

I didn't think the Deadspin article was even subtle about this. I thought it did everything but come right out and say it but if the writers had reason to know that this is the case, then I absolutely applaud them for not saying it directly. No one deserves to be outed that way. But this is still speculation from all of us because we just don't know. In truth, maybe the reason I'm so ready to latch onto this is because it's more appealing to me than believing he made all this up just for publicity or because he's some sort of sociopath.

 

The reasons he'd do it are perfectly clear. They guy is 1) a football player, 2) at Notre Dame, and 3) a Mormon. That's like the "stay in the closet as long as possible" trifecta. I think he had the made-up girlfriend as a cover but needed a reason no one ever saw her and as soon as you start expanding on the lie is when it begins to unravel. With that kind of scrutiny, there was no way he could keep it up. Again, this is pure speculation and maybe it's just me being optimistic and hoping he's not capable of a story this outrageous for nothing but publicity.

 

 

 

This is the backing the theory needed that I have been waiting for. There has to be something bigger going on that is unknown. Surely this is not just about publicity and he and Tuiasosopo appear to be way too close for Tuiasosopo to scam his friend like that. These two have a history.

I can. We still have yet to have the 'gay superstar' so the pressure that first one will face is ridiculous. Having to hide it to avoid all that is something he shouldn't have to do but unfortunately our society still isn't ready for that yet.

You're looking at this from a present day super fan. I looke at it from my wife's perspective. I told her about this, she said, "That's weird, why did he lie?" I told her about Lance Armstrong and his interview, and now we are DVRing the interview and she's all about it. Lance has been in the media mainstream for SOOOOO long.

I definitely agree with you there. If he does come out gay he could have done a much better job of hiding it. He's dangerously close to blowing his cover.
