January 6, 201313 yr It didn't end up hurting them but that time out after first down Marvin called at the end of the first half was dumb. They gave Houston more time to possibly get a FG at the end of the half. Also burning that time out with 4:30 left in the game where you need you would need time outs was brutal. I agree with you on the time out in the first half. The time out with 4:30 left I was ok with. It was third down and a must convert situation. That was a critical play call they had to get right. Plus, the Bengals IMO were not going to stop the Texans and get the ball back so no need to save timeouts.

Why weren't they ready with a play call in such a critical situation? No matter what you need to save the time out in a game you're down 6 by being prepared for a play call just in case you stop them.
January 7, 201313 yr They played the Gals both times. Not elite wins. Nice try. As I said which teams are elite to you? If Green Bay loses to San Fran again are they no longer elite? Is Atlanta elite even though they usually get knocked out right away like the Bengals? Is the Giants elite even though they either miss the playoffs or barely make it? Are the Patiots still elite even though they haven't been able to win a Super bowl in what like 8 years even though they are always there in the playoffs? I am just curious to what teams are elite for you? Accoring to your standards I guess its just 2 or 3 teams in the NFL who may be elite? Which if that is the case then the Bengals are in the same position as the other playoff teams who are not elite.
January 7, 201313 yr They are light years from being "there". If "there" means a dominating elite teams that win playoff games... Now if "there" means getting a six seed and a birth to a wild card game, then you should be happy. I am not happy. However as bad as the Bengals franchise has been which everyone likes to talk about, then why do people act like it should be a quick process of becoming the worst franchise in football to being elite? It sucks that they lost yesterday, however they are not starting to consistently be a team who can make the playoffs. Obviously they need to make that next step though, and now to add some pieces to get there. So I am not happy that they lost yesterday, however I am happy to see this franchise actually make progress which becoming more consistent in things is progress. Now they do need to take that next step, and next year is a huge year for that. Next year could determine which way this franchise will go and it will start in the off season. Which people need to realize right now that the Bengals won't go out and sign all these free agents. The money Mike Brown is required to spend will probably go to locking up their young guys like Dunlap, Geno, Green, and even Vontez who will be looking for more than a free agent rookie contract.
January 7, 201313 yr Some random thoughts on this loss; Dalton's mind is way too busy in big games. Rey's is not busy enough. Andy seems to make his mind up in the huddle who he's going to throw it too, and locks in. Gresham must have one of the lowest targets vs. reception ratios in the league. He has to be close to the highest number of drops in the league, and seldom makes a tough catch. Gruden will not get a HC position this year due to his game plan on Saturday. I can't recall one play called to their best offensive weapon in the first half. I'd like to see Teo in stripes with their first pick !

How in the world do you only run the ball 3 or 4 times in the first half especially after your RB has over 40 yards on those few runs? On top of that, with only running the ball that few amount of times how in the world do you end up with -6 yards passing in the same half? LOL that may be one of the worst performances by a QB and a OC in the history of the NFL in a playoff game. I do get a laugh at all those Bengals fans who for some reason think Gruden will be a HC candidate....seriously who in their right mind would hire Gruden as a HC? What has he ever done in the NFL to show that he would make a great HC? The Bengals didn't surprise me Saturday, I knew they would lose because they just aren't good enough. Plain and simple. It's not a hatred towards the team, I love the Bengals, I am however very realistic each year in my evaluation and aspirations of what I think the Bengals will do. They don't have the QB or O-Line or Receivers to make any splash in the post season. They definitely don't have the HC to do anything in the post season, and any HC who time and time again still allows Tate to be on their team shows their lack of intelligence. This team is so far away from doing anything in the post season that Saturday's game was more expected than not if you know this team very well.

What are you talking about?!?!?!?!?!?!?! since when is 40+ years considered being a quick time frame to becoming elite? Where exactely have you been the past 20+ years? You act like this is simply a growing process for the Bengals and they are on the right track. You act like they have only been around 4 years and are going through growing pains and they will do nothing but improve and before you know it they will be in the Super Bowl for their 3rd time. That's what cracks me up about your posts, you act like it's a short period of time and all we need to do is sit back and give them a couple years and they will be where we all want them to be. This isn't a rebuilding process, this isn't a new team to the league. This is a team that has been in existence over 40 years and you act like they are on the right track. The right track to where I ask? how long does a rebuilding process take? They have been "Rebuilding" for 23 years now. When do people like you stop using that excuse or the other idiotic excuse of "It's a young team" Whose fault is it that they are a young team? Whose fault is it that they should be in a rebuilding stage? Let me give you a quick little history of the Bengals, and I wont even bother with going back to the day Mike Brown took over, I will only go back to the day Marvin Lewis was hired. Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis both stated that you don't build a winner through free agency, you build a team through the draft. That is a quote and it's been spoon fed down our throats since 2003. So I ask, where is that team we built through the draft to win and be fighting for Super Bowl titles? The best players we drafted in that time are all gone. For a team that says they build through the draft has time and time again let their best drafted players in that time frame move on to other teams starting with Eric Steinbach and ending with J Joseph, while at the same time franchise tagging players that would be gone the very next year....talk about a waste of time. This team also is the only team in the entire league that keeps a Head Coach who has a losing record and 0 playoff wins after 10 years! Every other team in the NFL, and they all have, would of fired Marvin Lewis long ago. What do the Bengals do after one of MArvin's worst seasons ever? They give him a contract extension!!!!!!!! There have been teams that have fired coaches the same year they had winning records (Lovie Smith as an example) There are teams that have fired HC who have taken their team to 4 NFC Championship games and also taken their team to the Super Bowl (Andy Reid) Must I go on? All this and you have the nerve to say "people act like it should be a quick process of becoming the worst franchise in football to being elite?" What quick process are you talking about????? I think you are sadly mistaken because it was you who said the team is great, we on the other hand were telling you they aren't as good as you thought they were. Now that you were proven wrong and we were proven right AGAIN, you come out and tell us we were the ones expecting too much out of this team? Wow! Sorry my friend, but you couldn't have been more wrong. Again I ask the question, since when is 40+ years considered too quick to become elite?

Sorry my friend, but you couldn't have been more wrong. Again I ask the question, since when is 40+ years considered too quick to become elite? Proven right again? Go look at what records the people thought the Bengals would have last year and then even before the season? Then go back and look at how I thought they would do the last two years. So please tell me once again who was right? Yeah good luck with finding anything to show you were right on your prediction. Yet there you go again with you just really bold face lies, which you are good at. Once again you say that I keep saying they are great, and once again never once have I said that. Even people who agree with you in doubting everything the Bengals do, probably will admit I never once said they were great. They are a a good team, but they are not there yet plain and simple. And yes when they were as bad as they were from the 90's to early 2000's and then again starting in 2007 it is not so quick to be simply horrible to being elite. It does not happen that quickly at all, and does take some time. They are showing some positive signs and that is reason to be excited about it. Now with this franchise could they quickly go about making some stupid decisions to ruin all that, no doubt about that. However over the last 3 years they have done things the right way, and have put together one of the better young teams in the NFL who is making the playoffs but can't get over the hump yet. So I am excited about the future of this team, and will only join you in being down if they go about finding away to ruin things again like they have in the past. However until then I will be excited about the future even though I am still down about this year. No matter what you say will change that, especially when most of the things you say has simply been not true and now we can add your numbers on Brees being another thing not true for what you said.
January 8, 201313 yr now we can add your numbers on Brees being another thing not true for what you said. You really continue to harp on the same things again and again even when you were proven wrong. Do me and everyone else a favor and try to stay on topic. You were proven wrong about the Brees numbers and yet you still continue to bring other topics into different threads. Do us all a favor and quit going back and forth from topic to topic and stay on the subject being discussed, I'd hate to have to go into every topic like you do and bring up the Brees thing to show how wrong you are again and again.

Please give me your timeline of what you consider the right amount of time needed to turn a team around? You say they are headed in the right direction, well it's hard to go down when you are already at the lowest. They started to change in 2003 with the hiring of Marvin Lewis. It's been 10 years, how many years do you think it actually takes? What are you going to do, everytime they have a bad season and losing season you automatically get to start over then when they have a winning season they are automatically headed in the right direction and then when they have a losing season again they automatically get to start over and everything in the past gets wiped out. So I'm curious with what your definition is of "Headed in the right direction" and how long that is supposed to take. Please inform me. 10 years, if you can't build a consistent winner in that time frame then guess what...you failed. You simply are a Bengals apologists and enabler is what it sounds like to me. Point blank, anything less than a super Bowl appearance is a failure. Bengals didn't make the Super Bowl again thus they failed this year.

You do realize that there has been no team that hasn't won a post season game in 22 years except for the Bengals right? That means every team out there has won a playoff game since the last time the Bengals have won. Something else to chew on, the Bengals also have the longest AFC/NFC Championship game drought than any other team in the league....something I bet you also didn't know. January 8, 201313 yr Ah the age old argument. The enraged realist vs. the blind optimist. Almost as compelling as good vs. evil. I guess just by name Hellbird is evil:lol:
January 8, 201313 yr So realistically, what is the timeline for a team to put up or shut up?? I saw Holmgren come to Green Bay and within 2 years, I knew we were gonna be bringing that Lombardi Trophy home in the near future. Holmgren had an incredible staff and a stable of QB's behind Favre. I think the magic number is four seasons. It takes about that long to build your team, your staff, your identity. If you haven't done it by then, everything gets stale, everyone loses faith/interest and/or moves on to greener pastures. I'm not doing any "research" to back up this assertion, but the Marvin Lewis ship has sailed...and sunk.
