As far as being allowed to play, I'm sure that's a coaching decision as well as scheduling issue. From my experience almost all select teams would be on par with any local freshman team, with quite a few select teams being far superior. Especially those in the National division.

 

I know that some schools allow them to play for the select team at the same time as the High School team and some do not. My guess is that the KHSAA has a rule regarding it. It would be like playing AAU basketball during the High School season or Club Volleyball during the High School season. I thought that there is a rule against it.

I know several Highlands players played SWOL during the season.

So here are a couple of honest questions about middle school kids playing freshman baseball.

That does make sense. And besides once most kids are freshman their select teams don't start playing until the H.S. season is over.

Listening to some of these people (probably parents of kids that have played baseball all the way through) talk about discouraging kids to try out that haven't played in a while seems really selfish. I understand you may feel its your kid's turn to play and now a JC or some other kid swoops in their senior year to "steal" their spot away from them. Healthy competition means the best team being put on the field this spring. While I see that you want your son to have his day in the sun, don't you want the team to put the best players out there? I commend JB and JR for what they have done with these kids. I just hope they are there for my boy to learn from. I'm also very excited to hear about all these kids trying out for baseball. Can't wait to walk down with my boy to catch some games this year.

Depends on the level of play of the Summer ball team. Many of the SWOL teams in the american league are not as good as the freshman level. If you are talking about a National league team, especially one like the Flames or Midland then they would be better off playing for them and waiting till high school to play freshman ball.
