Ft Myers, Florida

Featured Replies

I am heading to Ft Myers Florida on thursday 1/3 and I'm going to stay until 1/13. I have never stayed in that area of Florida in the past and I was wondering if anyone could recommend sights I should see and/or restaurants I should visit. Looking forward to getting away for a bit and enjoying a bit of warmer weather.

You have to go to Sanibel Lovely place, Edison home is nice but honestly, it's a place that we used to go almost every year in May, to just relax do some fishing and play a round or two of golf and nothing more.

If you enjoy golf, check out The Forrest County Club. My man is the tennis pro there. Nice course.

Sorry. I've not spent much time down there. I could ask my niece about it, she lives there.

There is also an outstanding ice cream shop right behind Ft. Myers beach (on the main strip, just off the beach). You'll want to check that out.

We are going to Porta Gorda next week. How far is this from Fort Myers? I am thinking 15-20 miles.

Punta Gorda is north of Ft. Myers. Approx. 30 min drive.

I second TOG's comment above. It has been a few years since I was there but go to Sanibel Island, take the drive up to Upper Captiva Island. A beautiful drive. Have dinner at the Mucky Duck and watch the sunset while you eat. If you like collecting sea shells, make a day of it and walk the beaches there. Enjoy.

Thanks.

There is a pretty cool boardwalk in Naples, FL (about 25 mins south of Ft. Myers off I-75 S). You see some interesting wildlife along the boardwalk, including river otters, a bald eagle (sometimes), and alligators. It is hit or miss but it's an interesting trip, plus you could eat in Naples before and/or after.

I think the name of the place is the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, and here is a link to their website: Conservancy of Southwest Florida

I have seen full grown alligators, baby gators, bald eagles, river otters, a wood pecker, and several other animals there over the years.

My brother lives in Ft Myers, its not a bad town, not terribly tourist trappy and has everything you would want.

Wireman is right, Loveboat Ice Cream is fantastic, its real close to Ft Myers beach.

There's a place inland called Bubbas Roadhouse, not the classiest steak joint, its got paper table cloths and a beer swilling crowd, but my goodness, i would eat every meal there if i could.

Sanibel is also the best place to go, i love riding on the bike trail, stopping at the beach, love Sanibel.

Also best place for breakfast is Bennet's fresh roast. Home of the bacon maple donut.

(sorry all my recommendations are food, all i do there is eat and hang out with my nephews!)
