I would hope not. It's no different IMO than a kid going on an interview for a scholarship. I'm all about commitment to a team but the big picture also has to come into view.

You do know its not a game but a Jr Combine for Nick

Basically, from what I remember, it went something like this...

 

Day 1 - consists of Classroom sessions covering everything from nutrition to how to deal with college coaches during the recruiting process. Photo opps, media meetings.

 

Day 2 - They will then go and get their measurables documented to the 1/4" and 1/2 lb along with wing span etc.

Following this they will do offical timing of the 40 yd dash and pro shuttle, measure long jump and vertical.

 

Day 3 - They will break down into groups and do some serious contact drills, mind you without equipment.

Lineman will workout in the endzones and sidelines, actually this was the best part of the whole combine watching these monsters beating the heck out of one another.

The skill players will do a bunch of one on one and some 7 on 7.

A whole bunch of trash talking and showboating from what I remember.

 

The upper deck of the Alamo dome is closed as this is where the colleges film from. I would say there were at least 200+ cameras rolling during the event.

 

Last day of the event the kids go to the Army All American football game featuring Srs only.

 

An unbeliveable experience that no kid that is using football as his vehicle to his education should ever miss out on.

Not a Ky kid but Tristen Hoge of Highland High School in Pocatello Idaho and nephew of Ft Thomas resident Merril Hoge will be in attendance this weekend in Texas for the Junior combine. At 6'-6" 275lbs and on almost every All American select team, I would say he will have his pick of where ever he wants to go. Had the chance to coach Tristen at the U15 All American game in Canton a few years back. Literally a freak of nature!!!! Tristen's dad Marty played QB at Sand Diego State back in the 80's...

I played in college with both Meril and Marty (who actually started his college ball at Idaho State) and I've followed Tristen a little from back in Poky. This combine is VERY pricey and when you factor in the transportation and lodging it gets to the point where you have to figure out the true value. One of my former players attended a couple of years ago and had good experience and learned alot but overall thought there could have been more on the recruiting front. If you can afford it, by all means attend but if not it is not the end of the world if the goal is to make it at the D1 level as this can still be accomplished by other means.

Tristen is a top 100 kid now. Notre Dame is on him. Has offers from top programs across the country.

Also, if any BGP'ers are coming and need to know anything about the city, whether it be hotels, tourist destinations, restaurants off the beaten path, etc., just let me know. I live in some apartments downtown that are fairly close to the Alamodome.

That's pretty close! I spent some time in SA when I was going through basic for the Air Force and the police academy and k-9 school.

Thanks. I don't know if close to the Alamodome is always a good thing though. It's definitely better than living in the Med Center as far as property crime goes though (don't even get me started on that).

The combine is held at the Alamodome the same week as the US Army All American Game.

 

The combine is for Jrs and the actual game is obviously for Srs.
