Betsy Layne 42 Highlands 35

Final from the Pikeville Invitational

Birds fall in the opening game after a 4 day layoff. Inclement weather cancelled practice yesterday and the rust was evident today.

Drew Houliston also sat out this game, his 13ppg would have been nice.

Dylan Meade led the Bobcats with 17 points.

Halftime the Birds led 19-18 but could only muster 16 2nd half points.

Turner and Witte led the Birds with 11 and 10 pts.

Highlands (4-5) will play Harlan Co (11-1) who lost their first game of the year today to Breathitt Co.

Highlands 13 6 2 14 35

Betsy Layne 14 4 11 13 42

Highlands (5-5) -- Hinkle 3, Witte 10, Turner 11, Green 5, Feggins 2, Gronotte 2, True 2.

Betsy Layne (8-2) -- Newsome 7, Meade 17, Case 8, Hamilton 3, Daniels 4, Rogers 3.

The key words here to me are "after a 4 day layoff" How many schools in Northern Kentucky did not have practice for 4 days before preparing for a holiday tourney? I understand Drew Houliston did not play, but to only score 35 points against a Class A school in four quarters is not very good.

Highlands has got to find someone to step up and put the ball in the basket.

Plenty of possessions occur without getting shots. Can't score if you don't shoot. Never get easy baskets.

Witte, Turner, Houliston and Hergott were expected to carry the scoring load. Hergott done for year with ACL. Turner just back from injury, now Houliston is out.

The losing ways will continue if points don't start coming from some of the role players. Time for True, Hinkel, Granotte, and the JV kids that are getting plenty of minutes to step up. Next chance is tomorrow against Harlan County.

I wont disagree with you there, 35 points is pathetic IMO.

Expect a faster paced higher scoring game tomorrow vs the Black Bears from Harlan Co.

Starting 5 tonight was Hinkel, Witte, Turner, Green and True.

2 point 3rd qtr killed them.

The Birds need more production out of True. He had 14 in a win last week and got a lot of good looks. Hopefully he can put up better numbers tomorrow.

I wasnt at the game so I cant really give you more details. I was getting text updates.

Birds were down 37-32 with 1:30 left. Witte/Hinkel and Green hit consecutive treys to bring them back. They could only get as close as 40-35. I think the Birds left some points on the FT line today as well.

Turner and Witte need to be getting atleast 15 shots at the goal with Houliston out during this tournament. You cant depend on role players for the bulk of your scoring. They are great to get loose balls, rebounds an occasional bucket off an assist but the scoring has to come from the Veterans and Witte and Turner need to step it up and put the ball in the basket.

What is wrong with Houliston? Knee?

Yes, he has been playing with pain for a couple weeks now.

Highlands didn't practice before this tourney?

If this game is any indication the Harlan game could have a running clock

Not if the Harlan County that lost to Breathitt County shows up. No way they should have lost that game.

Highlands didn't practice before this tourney?

No practice from the last game at Woodford County to the first game of the Pikeville tourney.

Wow.

Wow.

No kidding.................Just do not understand why practice was cancelled yesterday and why you do not practice on Christmas eve in the morning. That would be like Dale not practicing on Thanksgiving night to prepare for playoff game.
