Cov. Holy Cross @ Newport Central Catholic (Friday12-21)

Featured Replies

I will be at my daughters game and not able to make this one. Im wondering what kind of joke cheer the NewCath students can come up with for payback from HC field goal cheer last year. How do you represent a blowout and running clock?? I will take the breds in this one by 15. Get the ball in the paint!!

NC (some) are still a bit sensitive about that loss, I see.

HC is 3-3.

HC Internet Radio will be there to broadcast this game live for those who can't get there Friday night. I will post a link to the broadcast in another thread.

I concur Clyde, these gents provide a great service to NKY high school sports fans. :thumb:

LB looking forward to seeing you tomorrow night, I hope the internet access in the gym keeps us online long enough to have a clean broadcast. :-)

Flotsam and others who have commented on the broadcast of games. Im only 2+ yrs in with HC and appreciate the kind words. Guys like Wehry and Schabel paved the way and have done a great thing for CC and BB. I'm sure the common theme in all of us is the love for No Ky Sports and the love for our respective schools.

Thanks again.

Ha not at all I am to old for that HS junk, i just enjoy a nice crowd at the game. Thats why I always enjoy going to CovCath nasketball games when I have time. Solid basketball and solid cheering section that always makes me lauuugh and smile.

I too will have to miss this one due to Christmas party.

I like the chances of Holy Cross competing if Campbell plays well. He needs to stay out of foul trouble and this will show us just how good Holy Cross is. Big test for the Indians and a big test to see how McDonald and Schulte do against one of the best defenders in the 9th. I still think HC better than the 3-3 record shows. Tough place to play up on the hill. I'll have to say NCC by 5.

Don't forget about the nkysports guys and your guy Walter, Clyde!!

Wish I could attend this game but I'm working on an article on James Bolden so I'll be covering the event at Holmes this week end.

As for the game, I've seen both play and both present match up problems.

Here is my break down of the game:

Pangallo v M. McClendon

This is the match up that is the most underrated, IMO. Pangallo is more of a distributor, whereas McClendon has been more aggressive lately and been scoring to take the load off the other Indians. I'd give the edge to McClendon in quickness but Pangallo on the defensive side. Pangallo is more fundamentally sound and, IMO, has a better handle. Both will need to play well and limit turnovers for their team to win.

Edge: Even

Beuter v Pouncy

This is a no brainer, IMO. Beuter is a much better scorer and IMO plays better defense. I also think Beuter is more consistent with his shot. When he is on, though, Pouncy can be deadly from outside. The key is for him to attack the rim and try to make Beuter respect his driving ability which will open up the outside shot. Same for Beuter.

Edge: Newcath

Seibert v C. McClendon

Christian is probably stronger and could be a problem if he chooses to post up Seibert but Nick is much more athletic and his length will cause problems for Christian. If Seibert doesn't rely on the 3 ball, he can make a major impact in this game at both ends. The biggest problem with shooting a lot of 3's is it usually leads to long rebounds which allows HC to get in transition and dictate the tempo, which they want to do. At the end of the day, Seibert bring much more to the table than McClendon.

Edge: Newcath

Schulte v Gabbard

Another tough match up for Holy Cross. Schulte should have his way with Gabbard offensively, as I don't think TG can defend Schulte if he stays in the post. Too big, too athletic, and too strong down low. Defensively, Schulte will need to stay out of foul trouble with Gabbard roaming around the perimeter. This alone makes me think that Newcath will play more zone than a lot of people think. HC is streaky from outside and playing a zone forces HC to beat them with jumpers.

Edge: Newcath

McDonald v Campbell

This will be an absolute war if both decide to stay in the post. McDonald can score on Tony and do it at will....see the 9th region All A final last year. At the same time, Campbell's versatility will make him tough to defend. When he is aggressive, he is almost unstoppable in this region. The key is for him to not settle for jumpers and try to attack the rim. I do think that he will lead this game in rebounding. The thing that makes me confident Newcath wins this game is that the Breds have 3 guys (McDonald, Seibert, Schulte) who can defend Campbell whereas Campbell is the only one who can defend McDonald and try to keep him in check. Expect a lot of double teams down low to limit the easy looks Campbell gets. One on one, I'd take Campbell, but this is a very tough match up overall for HC and Campbell. IF the Indians dictate tempo, however, McDonald becomes a non factor in an uptempo game.

Edge: Holy Cross

Should be a good one but in the end, Newcath simply too big, and too talented. I like the Breds by 7-12.

NCC bigs will dominate Campbell. I like Campbell but think the bigs of NCC will wear him out. NewCath wins going away.

You believe he has better handles than Markel really WOW.If Christian comes out and is aggressive with the ball and his defense he will have his way with Seibert.

Thats an awfully big statement if he says out of foul trouble NCC bigs will not be able to do anything with him.

Great preview Walter. Cant say I'm shocked that you will be missing this game for a Holmes article.

Don't forget about the nkysports guys and your guy Walter, Clyde!!

True dat. I was thinking of guys that do it nightly for one school.

I've seen both teams. McClendon is more turnover prone than Pangallo.

And Seibert is a lot stronger than you're giving him credit for. You obviously haven't seen Newcath.
