If teachers were armed it would only be teachers that felt comfortable with it and the weapon would have to be on their person at all times. No locking it in a drawer or keeping it in a central location.

 

I saw a few months ago where a school system actually installed a gun locker in the school office and an AR-15 was kept in it for the school resource (police) officer to have available if this type of situation were to arise.

Better design would work from 8:30 to 2:50, but when the kids are loading and off loading buses before and after school it is really difficult to control entrances when 400, 500 or 1000 kids are coming and going.

 

Not only that but what about evening events at the school, such as concerts, ballgames, plays, etc.

We can't live in a society where we are so scared of what could happen that we don't live and enjoy our lives.

 

I have been writing a story (may be a book someday) about a nightmare scenario for the US and in doing so realize there are about a million ways to create havoc and mass casualties without ever picking up a firearm.

 

I just don't know about this. Carrying a gun is one thing, but being able to use it effectively and safely in a life or death, dangerous combat situation is another story. It takes a lot of training to be able to do so....shooting at targets on the range isn't training enough. Everyone seems to assume that anyone would be able to stop a crazed, heavily armed killer bent on wiping out everyone if only they had a handgun on their person.

I do know one thing. It's harder to stop a crazy gunman when you are unarmed than when you are armed.

 

And I'm not suggesting you put a gun in the hands of someone who doesn't want one.

The solutions to protecting schools has to do with design, not with putting guns IN the schools. That's just an obscenely irresponsible thought.

 

Design the schools to have reinforced entrances. Design them to include "lock down" doors similiar to what hospitals use for fire safety. Install panic buttons that sound an alarm when pushed in the hallways and classrooms. Those are some of the solutions.

 

The challenge is modifying schools that are unable to be moved to a new school. And although this would add to the expense of the building of a school, could be implemented upon new-build projects.

 

Putting guns in the school is an invitation for disaster, and one which the merits do not outweigh the drawbacks.

 

It's irresponsible IMO to immediately dismiss the idea because you don't agree with it.

 

I don't necessarily have a fool proof plan but I don't think he should be an automatic no.

 

You can NOT bullet proof every single part of the school. And with a lockdown, what happens if a gunman is in a room and the rooms then get locked down? Some of the kids from Newtown might not have survived had they been locked in a room. If I'm not mistaken some reports stated several kids ran out of a room and out of the school while the gunman was killing students in the same class.

Some worry about the few who might are armed that might become targets. I would say it would be better to be an armed target than an unarmed target.

I am with you. I just feel like something will go wrong with armed teachers. Too many hormones and not enough maturity in a high school. Some kid will get angry or lose it, get a teacher's gun and there you have a tragedy. In an elementary, do we want a whole generation of kids growing up looking at armed teachers every day? It just doesn't feel right.

 

Along these lines, the best option is to have one or two people in administration or another designated person in the school allowed to have access to a weapon which is always locked down and hope the preventive side helps. Similar to the armed air marshalls on airplanes. If a would be perpetrator knows there is someone in that school with a weapon, maybe they will look for another target for their "anger".

My buddy pointed out to me something that is an obvious miss. These killers know the schools, the schools know them. He said when he walks up to the locked door where his kids attend, they look thru the camera and buzz the door to let him in. He could easily have weapons on him.
