Will We See the Death of High School Sports?

Featured Replies

I can understand it if your kid is a d1 candidate in a particular sport. After all, a college education is now a 6 figure endeavor. But the overwhelming number of kids participating in HS sports are not d1 candidates. A six month commitment to a sport should be sufficient.
It is so expensive these days as you have said. The problem we are running into is my boy is really good at bboth baseball and football and will play whatever sport he can get offers for at the next level. We have been contacted by a scout and have a conference call tonight with him. The problem is though these days to get the exposure you need to get notiiced is you need to attend the camps etc. a lot of them, but playing two or three sports in high school makes it hard. Baseball camps take place when football season iis in and vice versa. So we just have to see how it all plays out. We already told his summer baseball coach that he may have to miss a couple tournaments due to football camps. It's just a lot of time needed and when you don't have the time it makes it hard.

But because of the high cost of college we are hoping something works out and he gets to play at the next level in one of the sports. One nice thing is they also look closely at the grades etc. and he has been taking AP courses since frshman grade and is on national honor Society which I hope also helps.

yes, the KHSAA changed the rule to allow high school sports to work on skills, and practice year round. In hopes of cutting back on the AAU/club play. At the same time this has caused high school sports to never take a break (except for dead period) and now more than ever encourages student athletes to play 1 sport. The old rule forced kids to play AAU...because they couldn't practice with high school teams. Now we have just forced kids to choose between AAU/club and school sports. Just last week one of our players missed a school basketball game to go play club soccer out of town. Most kids will choose the club/AAu becuase of the travel and experience. My son is a 3 sport athlete he goes to speed/agility workouts in the morning at 6:00 am (3 days a week), he then lifts during school in a class (4 days a week), and then goes to basketball practice after school. He is an average high school athlete but committs to these to stay on the field/court. I know the KHSAA has thought about extending the dead period and I am all for this. My son is a 4.0 student that has NEVER missed or sat out of a practice in any sport since starting middle school sports. Now with ACTscores and GPA and AP courses his stress level is at a max. I know he is not the only athlete out there feeling this way. I have told him to give up a sport but he refuses because he enjoys all 3. I just hate seeing a 16 year old so stressed at this age. He doesn't want to let any coach or team down. I am for the old rule that KHSAA had with school sports with what they allowed and did not allow. That way a kid could choose to play AAA/Club to get better and if they do (which we do as well) you can atleast choose to sit a weekend out or sit out a practice. With this new rule the kids feel stressed and pressured if they miss the smallest school work out.

IT is interesting what you say about the dead period. I hope they do extend it. AS you and many others know, that is not only the only time a kid has all year to have aa break but also is the only time a family can actually plan a vacation. We haven't had a family vacation in years and this year we finally are planning one during the dead period.

Couldn't agree more! It's almost impossible to play the 3 sports anymore unless you are playing them for fun. If you have any aspirations of playing at the next level (whatever that is for each kid), you are pressured to play that sport year round for fear that your skills will fall behind those that are playing that sport year round. My daughter loved soccer, bball and softball, but had to give soccer up two years ago. She was pretty good in all 3, now we look back and cross our fingers that she made the right decision. She has desire to play sports in college and I don't think she even cares which sport that is. She just likes to compete and probably wouldn't know what to do with herself is she didn't have that opportunity!

I will tell you one sport that your duaghter might also think about. The reason I bringg this up is because she sounds very athletic. The one sport that you could deffinatley find a scholarship for is Golf. There are so many schools looking for female golfers that they practically give scholarhsips away for that sport.

I will tell you a little story. I played golf in a golf league for years until my arthritis goot the best of me. But while playing in the league there was one female in the leaggue. She wasn't very good at all, actually she was horrible lol. The reason she wwas playing is that Thomas More started up a womens golf team and needed players, they asked her if she was interested in playing for them. At the time she diddn't golf, she would play maybe once a year with her dad, she took them up on the offer and got a very nice scholarship that basically paid for all her tuition just so they could fill spots on the team.

I since have found out that golf is the best way to get scholarships especially for females. It shocked me, but she has since graduated with a degree paid for because sshe was willing to play a sport she didn't play before lol.

Wooooooo!!!! Are you kidding me?? Club sports are devastating high school sports, especially on the girls side. Select teams now expect year round participation making athletes unavailable for other sports. See volleyball for an example. Girls basketball numbers are dropping fast because of this phenomena!

Another example is swimming. USA meets occur concurrently with high school meets meaning that the USA swimmers are often unavailable for high school meets. USA swimmers also rarely attend high school practices.

SPOT ON. We had girls miss the JV Regional softball tourney this past season for Club soccer and AAU hoops, and one girls didn't come out beacuase of Club volleyball. It's a joke!!!!!! Don't play if you can't make 100% committment.

High School Sports won't die, they will just be recreational extra curricular activities. I think swimming is already there.

Very true.

Soccer is the next thing to recreational anymore because of how competitive the AAU clubs are anymore. Baseball is falling that same path unfortunately. Summer ball is more important unfortunately than the School teams imo.

Football is the one and only sport that I can think of that doesn't have any other season except for the school season. Who knows, that may change in the next 20 years too, you could have select football traveling clubs playing in the spring. It wouldn't surprise me.

I don't know HB. The youth model for independent football leagues and travel teams is already out there. I don't think it would take much to extend it to high school aged youth.

I think in the next decade you'll see a significant decline in high school sports and that will be replaced by club sports. Years ago, this discussion was about specialization and look at that now. As much as I don't like it, it's a reality. I do agree with the post above, high school football would be the last to go, but volleyball, baseball, basketball, soccer and others are headed that direction never to return in my opinion.

I should have said in my experience but again I have always valued high school sports over club sports. I don't have girls that play sports so I have no clue how their calendars go. My oldest son played high school basketball and his AAU team shut it down in June when the high school basketball teams did their 2 week thing. My youngest will be on the AAU scene in the next year or so and he will value his high school team more as well. Makes me glad mine are almost done. Sounds like high school sports will suck in the next decade or so. Between six classes in football and club sports everything will be ruined.

High School Sports will not suck. Parents and fans just need to realize that High School sports exist for the benefit of the student, and not the parent or the fan. The more kids that participate in sports the better. So what if the level of competition suffers? The development of youth is far more important that the quality of our entertainment!

My concern though, is whether there will be resistance to funding high school sports by those that spend on club and aau sports? This is similiar to the political resistance to public school funding by those sending kids to private schools.

I haven't seen too many instances where a kid plays strictly club/select sports. For example, The AABC seasons don't start until after high school baseball ends, so no conflict there. Sports are a big part of high school and i just cant see kids giving that up.I have seen how important these club teams have become though. My daughter played high school volleyball, and chose not to play club in the offseason as she chose to work instead. This caused pretty big problems and she caught a lot of grief for her choice. I do also see the end is near for multi sports athletes, and the three sport star will likely almost never exist, as all sports are basically year round.

thanks! I have been thinking about an indivudual sport for both my girls. I think individual sports are good for other things too. You can't rely on teammates! It's all you! And, it's something you can take with you in life and always be able to do...once you learn it.

Holy cow...what would that cost a family?? At least in the other sports you can play multiple games in a day. My guess is you'd travel in football each week to play one game a weekend. maybe I'm wrong.

If anybody thinks Golf sounds crazy for a Women's scholarship sport, try rowing!!! Because of Title 9 and the need to offer equal scholarships to both genders, schools recruit for these teams and they are open to those with NO EXPERIANCE. Have seen this with schools in the west and north east.

My niece got a full ride to UC on a rowing scholarship. She took up rowing in her junior year while at NDA after surgery forced her to give up swimming. Didn't know anything about the sport either. Learned as she went along. Talk about a boring sport. Like cross country, there's literally no excitement until they come to the finish line.
