Will We See the Death of High School Sports?

Featured Replies

I feel the same way, but the reality is the players today are not the players of old. But, you inadvertently sided with me and RCC here. If the player isn't playing 100%, he just shouldn't be playing and he is not playing at 100% on the high school team but is in the club sport. So, in your statement you have said the player will not play high school sports, but will play club sports.

I agree if a kid isn't playing 100% stay home. If you are a player, you play hard in all games especially at the HS level.

Wooooooo!!!! Are you kidding me?? Club sports are devastating high school sports, especially on the girls side. Select teams now expect year round participation making athletes unavailable for other sports. See volleyball for an example. Girls basketball numbers are dropping fast because of this phenomena!

Another example is swimming. USA meets occur concurrently with high school meets meaning that the USA swimmers are often unavailable for high school meets. USA swimmers also rarely attend high school practices.

This is true. We almost had one of our kids miss the state championship football game because his club soccer team was playing in a tournament in TN last week. Glad to say the boy and his family made the right decision and played football, but it was a decision they had to make and only goes to show how the club and AAU teams can deffinatley interfere with high school teams etc.

I always struggle because my son plays HS Football and Baseball and after baseball season he then is basically mandated to play summer ball and after summer baseball he has to go back to football yet his summer ball team plays fall ball and tries to keep the kids to play that also. It's just too much. I don't like how sports have evolved into a 12 month a year sport....and that is for every sport.

I feel for the kids these days, it's taking the fun out of playing anymore. My kid used to play 3 sports (Football, Baseball, and Basketball) he dropped Basketball once he got into highschool because he said it was too much and only wanted to play the 2 sports so he could get a break sometime....boy was he wrong. There is no break at all for High School athletes. Just last years schedule for athletes like my son, Football started in November right after the season was over last year, They start with conditioning and weight lifting etc. Well the football season just got over 3 days ago which means it was over a year straight....now add on top of that that baseball has already started 2 months ago at the school, they try to get the kids on the field before it turns cold...the football players that play baseball as you know don't have to go to the baseball yet until the season is over. With that said it is still a year long thing, Baseball, Football doesn't matter. It's just too much and my kid as well as many others are simply exhausted.

Whatever happened to the days when we were growing up where once the season was over (Football for instance) you had 6 months until you had to get back into it again.

Sports has become a big business and that is a shame if you ask me.

I can understand it if your kid is a d1 candidate in a particular sport. After all, a college education is now a 6 figure endeavor. But the overwhelming number of kids participating in HS sports are not d1 candidates. A six month commitment to a sport should be sufficient.

We're two for two today with agreements! You and I just can't talk football! Ha Ha. We agree on everything else apparently!

If fairness to him, he is still old school and felt that he is just "supposed" to play high school. Almost felt obligated, as to not let down the school. He is a great kid. I don't want bad things for him. As I agree with all of you...go 100% or don't go at all, I just used this as an example of the challenge it is becoming for some kids. I'm sure he felt the same way. His heart told him to play, but his brain said be careful not to hurt your chances where your bread is buttered. That's the only reason I put that example out there. It's a tough decsion for the kids.

Sorry, wasn't finished. You say "especially at the high school level". That tells me you place more importance on the high school game. That's exactly what this topic is about. The new age players are starting to transition to the way of thinking that high school sports are secondary now. I know several will have a hard time believing that, but it's happening and like the other poster said, it's happening at light speed on the girl's side.

Couldn't agree more! It's almost impossible to play the 3 sports anymore unless you are playing them for fun. If you have any aspirations of playing at the next level (whatever that is for each kid), you are pressured to play that sport year round for fear that your skills will fall behind those that are playing that sport year round. My daughter loved soccer, bball and softball, but had to give soccer up two years ago. She was pretty good in all 3, now we look back and cross our fingers that she made the right decision. She has desire to play sports in college and I don't think she even cares which sport that is. She just likes to compete and probably wouldn't know what to do with herself is she didn't have that opportunity!

Yea, but how long until we see a club version of football start? If the benefit of college recruiting is recognized in other club sports, how long until someone sees football as a worth while endeavor?

Many states have turned over youth (middle school) football to Pop Warner. Does Pop go pop and move into the high school ranks?

True. I know someone who got a D1 scholarship in soccer and never played high school soccer. It is ironic this thread is in the KY Football forum because the one sport that doesn't have to worry about this is football since there is no select/club/AAU football.

While there are no select or a aau teams in football, where is the majority of recruiting activity of high school football athletes? Camps and Combines. I would assert that if you have a 6'3" athlete running a 4.3 50 at a combine, he would get a lot of recruiting attention even if he never put on pads! The recruiting folks only show to the games when they are ready to close the sale!

I have been noticing this trend for quite awhile now. When my daughter was at St. Mary, they didn't have boys soccer teams in U12 and U14 for years because all those boys were playing select only. The good thing about his trend in high school is that some kids who would have been cut, now have a chance to make the team. Any time you have more kids playing sports overall, I'm all for it!

There are a lot of players that would rather not for their school teams because the play is slower or just not as competitive as their select teams. They play, but can't wait until the school season is over to get to their select or club team.

Maybe not, but it may just fade away. In other words, you may see the "super stars" playing club sports and the "rest" playing high school sports.

Look at Little League Baseball. Nowadays, if you aren't playing for a travel team (AABC), you are playing LLBB. LLBB has gone downhill over the past several years in most States. Now, when we watch the LL World Series, many would argue that it hasn't been watered down but just look at your local teams and examine it closely. I think you would agree with me.

I think the real issue is the threat of lawsuits. There are far more standards in high school football in terms of safety than any other sport (heat index-equipment-rules enforcement-etc...). Insurance alone would be astronomical and that would have to be picked up by the kids...most pay zero to play high school football or a very small fee (25-100 dollars). I think the big hang up to moving to club is going to be liability...who wants that???? Not to mention facilities. Are club sports going to start buidling massive stadiums or purchasing land for football feilds? Volleyball and basketball can be played in the same facility, and soccer is varied on the smallest-largest size feild you can play on so there is wiggle room. I don't see the AAU/CLUB version as being a real viable option anytime soon. With that said, I wouldn't be shocked to see AAU 7 on 7 dominate the spring and summer very soon!! This will corrupt football more just as it has the other sports. AAU is a dirty pool filled with self-interested folks (most NOT ALL) who care little for the kids interest. OK, off soapbox!!

This select vs school has caused friction in the lacrosse world in Kentucky with the Louisville HS teams wanting to play games only during the week so the travel players could play tournaments on weekends. It was an issue in the recent breakup of the Ky lacrosse league.

Also in hockey the high schools in Kentucky start early and overlap with football in October and November. The reason for the early start is they complete the season early in late February or early March before the regional tournaments start for travel teams. So the travel teams in hockey force an overlap with football that keeps kids who are involved (or want to be involved) in both.

yes, the KHSAA changed the rule to allow high school sports to work on skills, and practice year round. In hopes of cutting back on the AAU/club play. At the same time this has caused high school sports to never take a break (except for dead period) and now more than ever encourages student athletes to play 1 sport. The old rule forced kids to play AAU...because they couldn't practice with high school teams. Now we have just forced kids to choose between AAU/club and school sports. Just last week one of our players missed a school basketball game to go play club soccer out of town. Most kids will choose the club/AAu becuase of the travel and experience. My son is a 3 sport athlete he goes to speed/agility workouts in the morning at 6:00 am (3 days a week), he then lifts during school in a class (4 days a week), and then goes to basketball practice after school. He is an average high school athlete but committs to these to stay on the field/court. I know the KHSAA has thought about extending the dead period and I am all for this. My son is a 4.0 student that has NEVER missed or sat out of a practice in any sport since starting middle school sports. Now with ACTscores and GPA and AP courses his stress level is at a max. I know he is not the only athlete out there feeling this way. I have told him to give up a sport but he refuses because he enjoys all 3. I just hate seeing a 16 year old so stressed at this age. He doesn't want to let any coach or team down. I am for the old rule that KHSAA had with school sports with what they allowed and did not allow. That way a kid could choose to play AAA/Club to get better and if they do (which we do as well) you can atleast choose to sit a weekend out or sit out a practice. With this new rule the kids feel stressed and pressured if they miss the smallest school work out.
