Question for Highland's Fans

Are there many multi sport athletes playing football at HHS? Does the football culture discourage multi sport participation so that football can be the focus all year round?

So who is the last player to play both ways for Highlands?

So who is the last player to play both ways for Highlands?

I think it might have been Adam Dempsey? He is a senior at UC and plays defensive tackle. At HHS he was an OT/DT..

I think Dale should give us a taste of what some of those guys can do on both sides of the ball just for entertainment purposes. LOL

I want to see Zach Harris blow somebody up from the LB spot. Put Seth Hope at TE and watch the kid catch and run. Richie "Pancake" Whitford on the DL just putting OL guys on roller skates bull rushing.

It will never happen though....Dale has so many kids buying into the program and training hard that they deserve spots on the field and he finds them. Once the games are out of reach then they get a shot to show what they can do.

I know that I can name at least 5 varsity starting baseball players that start on Highlands Defense this year. So the baseball conspiracy theory can be thrown out the window!:madman:

From what I have heard from some sources close to the Highlands football program, it sounds like the current HHS coaching staff is quite committed to the platoon system. With regard to the issue of a talent drop-off because of the platoon system and the fact that Highlands does not draw from a very large student body (relatively speaking), I think it is clear that this is a factor, and it seems to show itself early in the season. It has not been uncommon over the past few years (since HHS began the platoon system) for Highlands to start out more slowly and be a bit "rougher around the edges" early in the season, compared to how they would start off when they were playing their best athletes both ways. Look at this year... Highlands gets completely blown out by Trinity in a real-game format scrimmage and then trails Boyle County at halftime in a home game. It seems that as the season progresses, however, the quality of the product that HHS puts on the field improves, and the players who are not the top-tier athletes gain experience and benefit from great coaching as the year progresses to the point where HHS is now a much better squad come playoff time than at the start of the season. Along these same lines, I think (although I don't know for a fact) that the reason HHS has been playing the large Cincy teams later in the year is because the HHS coaching staff knows that HHS will be in much better position to compete with those schools later in the year, rather than at the start of the season. When HHS was not platooning, it was pretty common for HHS to actually play the Cincy teams fairly early in the season.

Also, Highlands appears to be doing more than merely platooning at this stage. I have heard that HHS will make multiple substitutions on offense and defense during the course of the game. For instance, it has been reported on BGP that HHS will have three WRs in on one play, and will bring in two or three different WRs on the next play, and will continue this pattern during the game in order to place a great deal of pressure of the opposing team's DBs and LBs who are in coverage.

How many boys attend Highlands? How many are on the football team?

So if the numbers of 420 are correct and that includes grades 9-12, that would mean roughly 1 out of every 3 boys at HHS play football.

And that is very, very impressive. People can cry all they want about Highlands doing this, or doing that, but that right there tells me one of the reasons they win, win big, and win all the time. If other schools could get that many young men to come out for football, then Highlands might have some competition.

And speaking to one of the bball coaches, they are waiting on 8-9 football players to get done with football and join the bball team. Just means a slow start for basketball, but it's always been that way! Several run track too. So no, not discouraged at all.

That's great to hear.:thumb:Maybe people can stop crying crocodile tears then about the football program supposedly stealing Athletes from other sports. Gets tiring:isurrender:

Ugh! What was this thread about anyway? Something about 2 platooning I think.

Yes, they two platoon. It works for even a small school like Highlands. It's not easy. You MUST have a system in place and you need complete buy in to the "system". You don't have to have great athletes (it helps), but it's more about training and discipline. It's not for everyone!

Does that sum it up?
