Obama care question

What happens to charities like St. Jude? If everyone has health insurance, then why would you need these charities to help cover cost of medical needs?

I'm far from an expert on St Jude but my mind tells me they are raising funds for cancer research and treatment. I don't see AHCA impacting them at all. We still need a cure.

What??? When has that EVER happened in a government run program?

My point was if the government has a monopoly they can set the rates, especially in a service industry.

Probably because Jim and I grew up drinking the same Ohio River water.:scared:

No sir -- our water came from a wonderful aquifer underneath the north-central KY area and is still among the best-tasting I've ever run across in my limited travels. To this day I take extra water bottles with me when visiting the parents to have some to take back with me.

Another part of the system's five-point cost restructuring includes eliminating "admirable but not sustainable" programs, Lewis said. The hospital also will work to standardize certain health-care procedures.

Such cost-cutting measures are happening across the country. On Wednesday, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina announced that it would cut 950 jobs by June.

This example is more to do with efficiences and eliminating waste than a statement on AHCA. They hired a VP in 2011 to eliminate wasteful spending including jobs that weren't necessary. About half of the jobs eliminated are administrative and clerical.

The hospital said that these cuts will have zero impact on the care given.

Would you expect them to say differently?

Possibly. If they were upset with having to cut people and wanted to let the public know that it's someone else's fault then I think they'd say it.

From the articles I read this was a bloated organization in a town with oversaturation of hospitals and treatment centers.

Wake Forest Baptist is one of the Premiere Hospitals in the region down here. But they have been building for the 12 years I've lived down here and continue to expand with Children's Hospitals, Heart Care and Robotic Surgeries. It's a great hospital but I could easily see it overburdened with staff.

As to competition there is a great hospital in Winston-Salem called Forsythe. But you have to realize that Greensboro is very close by with a massive Moses Cone Health Care system and Duke Hospital is just beyond that.

We are Hospital rich in the Piedmont-Triad Region.

Even if Obama Care is an absolute failure, we will learn something in the process. Yes , Obama Care is flawed, but the status quo is worse.

Pretty much sums it up for me.

As hospitals make moves that improve care and reduce readmission rates from infections, their revenues drop, said Sitarik.

"We have made great strides in improving our quality outcomes. But these gains have also triggered lowered revenues due in part to a reduction in readmissions."

The cuts are necessary as the hospital transitions to a new payment model, one that pays based on value or outcome, not on volume, said Sitarik.

"Eventually that will even out," said Lewis, "but for a while it will present a fiscal challenge."

The hospital is still moving forward with $350M in capital improvements and the need to get their expenses in line has resulted in a savings of $825k annually in drug purchasing by consolidating it to one vendor.
