Should There be a Basic Political Knowledge "Test" Required to Vote?

Featured Replies

In all seriousness; I've seen more voter intimidation, more thinly disguised attempts to keep qualified voters away from the polls via reduced early voting times, voter ID initiatives, etc. this year than I have in my lifetime. It's evil and un-American. If flies in the face of what this country stands for.

A "voter proficiency test" would be just one more example of an effort to ensure that fewer and fewer people decide.

Seems like I saw recently where last year was the first time that non-Caucasian live births in the United States were less than 50%. Get used to it.

Wow, only took 6 posts before someone ignorantly brings up race.

Funny Mustang, I thought you had a better opinion of me than that.

To be honest, my intention wasn't so much race but HISTORY. Study it. Apply it. And realize that things have a tendency to coming around again only in different packages.

If they're intelligent, I'd assume they'd see it for what it is, a way to raise the education level of the voting public.

So now, if someone sees it differently than you, the inference is they are not intelligent???

Wow. I think you might be proving my fears without knowing it.

I am not sure I believe this anymore. I would totally be for a simple national test requirement for voting registry. I am really tired of the extremely uneducated being able to decide the leaders of my country. We provide an education to everyone. Therefore, it is not a race or socio-economic issue. It is simply an issue of who takes advantage of the opportunity provided to them. I would be 100% for this.

Yeah, me too. I think anyone that is so ignorant as to vote for Gov. Romney should be disqualified from voting. I am sick of people that don't think just like me, know as much as me or in general are just as wonderful as me having a say in how our country is run. It is time for the vote in our country to be restricted to just the "better" people.

NO !!!

They've been suppressing the vote in Boyd Co for 30 years because I've had to produce a picture ID every single time I've voted.

No such suppression three counties to the west.biggrin.gif

UK I share your frustration at the ignorance of the American voting public but no way a knowledge test should ever be required.

When you vote this year tell them you don't have one. You'll still get to vote.

I would like to think this post was made with good intentions, but it smacks of elitism of the kind it took us HUNDREDS of years to overcome. Blacks couldn't vote because they were, well, not "people". Then, when slavery was abolished, further restrictions were placed in the form of the Jim Crowe laws. Women were excluded from voting because they weren't men. White males decided the course of our country for the longest time.

A citizen of this country has the privilege and right to vote, and whether someone else likes what criteria or "education" they use to decide their vote, nothing should impede that.

I've been called an uneducated voter, a naive voter and many other things. I'm neither of those, and refuse to allow a "test" to determine my right to vote. I'll leave that to the Constitution.

Question, does one even NEED to know the answers to UKM's questions to know how they want to vote? I mean, I don't apply my knowledge of civics in determining my vote at ALL.

I mean IF we're gonna have a poll to determine voting rights it should go something like this:

Do you agree with formerkywrestler on all issues?

Those who do get to vote. Those who don't stay at home. :D
