Quarterback Cam Newton has come under fire this season as he and the Carolina Panthers have struggled. Hall of Famer Warren Moon says the second-year player is getting too much of the blame and claims there's a troubling racial undertone to the criticism.

 

 

"I think a lot of this is because so many people want to say 'I told you so' about him but couldn't because he was so good last year," Moon told Yahoo! Sports. "I think people are overreacting. How can he be a bust? He just had one of the great years a rookie has ever had, and now he can't play? Come on."

 

Newton has been a target of particular criticism for the visible frustration he sometimes shows during games and in his postgame news conferences. Panthers receiver Steve Smith even publicly criticized Newton for sulking on the sidelines during Carolina's lopsided loss to the Giants in Week 3.

How am I not surprised someone is calling this racial? I guess my real surprise is that it didn't come from Stephen A. Smith. Newton is being criticized for the same thing that they go after Cutler for, not racial at all.

Where is the criticism of Stafford? He arguably had a better season than Cam last season and his team was better than Cam's last season. Stafford sucks this season like Cam does and his team sucks like Cam's team sucks as well. Why isn't Stafford getting the same criticism?

Did Stafford get the same amount of praise that Cam got last year? I'm not as in tune with the NFL as others, so that is a genuine question. I personally didn't hear Stafford being lauded as much as I did Cam. That he even had a year comparable to Cam is news to me. :lol:

If black members in the media were praising Vick and downing Eli at the same time then I think a case could be made.

Probably not as much. The Cam hype machine was on full blast last season. Much like the RGIII hype machine is on this season. However, Stafford was praised as finally arrived and while Cam was criticized some last season for his interceptions and his team's record Stafford seemed to be praised every step of the way for everything. I think the Lions made the playoffs last season also. They were supposed to take the next step this season. Instead they are awful like the Panthers and he has Calvin Johnson to throw to as well. I think Stafford's fall has been worse than Cam's.

I don't think it's racism at all. I think with Cam coming in as the number one pick after leading Auburn to the title, with all the side stories, of did his dad accept money, etc.. had led to the focus being on Cam more last year. Then he had a great year and broke rookie records and everyone thought he and the team would be that much better this year. However, when it did not go his way early, the moping and frowning etc. has made it a bigger conversation. Just my opinion.
