spindoc Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Well with my bad taste currently for Hannigan, I make a concerted effort to see if Meso can handle the catching duties.
stickymitts Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Well with my bad taste currently for Hannigan' date=' I make a concerted effort to see if Meso can handle the catching duties.[/quote'] You forget about the first half of the season? Not saying Hanigan is the guy but Mesoraco certainly isn't the answer.
gametime Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 If Dusty comes back, and I'm not convinced he will, I think it will be for one year only. The question is will he take a one year deal, or move on to the next job? Pure guess, but I think he scoffs at a one year offer and moves on...

LRCW Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 I think he would leave for a large market team. Dodgers were rumored a few weeks ago.
AverageJoesGym Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Rough NLDS aside, I would think Hannigan has cemented himself as the majority owner of the C position for a while... He's 32 and has played over 100 games only once in his career. He's never driven in more than 40 runs, scored more than 30 or had more than 16 extra-base hits in a season. The Reds really need Mesoraco to live up to his hype. Hannigan is just really limited but is Mesoraco isn't greatly improved you have to roll with him because of his defense and handling of the staff.
spindoc Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Rough NLDS aside, I would think Hannigan has cemented himself as the majority owner of the C position for a while... Then the REds have cemented themselves into 25 Ribbies from that hole all year long.

I get that, but the staff loves throwing to him and he has the respect of a lot of guys in the clubhouse. He's going to be back there for at least the next year or two starting 3 of 5 days IMO...
spindoc Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 I'd hope that Meso shows enough to supplant him then.

With that being true I think that they have to get rid of Stubbs and either resign Ludwick or sign another run producer for leftfield. They can't go into next season with automatic outs in the 7-8-9 spots. If they don't keep good production in left they will be below average at shortstop, catcher, centerfield, leftfield and shaky to average at third base.

I agree to an extent, especially on bringing back Ludwick. If they think Hamilton is the guy for the future in CF, I wouldn't be shocked to see one more year of Stubbs to bridge the gap. Not that I agree with it, but if they are trying to buy 1 more year to get Hamilton ready I don't know if they have much wiggle room there. And I wouldn't exactly call Hanigan an automatic out. He hit .274 with a .365 OBP. And to be fair they were below average at a lot of spots offensively this year and won 97 games in the regular season. Pitching and D is how this thing is constructed right now, and I don't see that changing...

Staff is the key. But we have to assume that the staff will be very nearly the same, or possibly slightly better with health. So, with that said, offensively I can't help but wish we got more from the catcher offensively. As for Stubbs, I wonder if Walt will shop him much? I hope so.

I'm just not willing to give up an extra run every game or two as Meso learns how to call a game at this level with a staff this solid. Not yet, at least. I'm fine with moving Stubbs as long as it isn't Heisey getting the job. Again, you can't have the backbone be pitching and D if you aren't rock solid up the middle. With Stubbs you know the defensive side is covered even with his massive flaws on O. With Heisey you get worse on D and about equal at the plate...
