When the insurgent chooses to blend in with the native population, it is the insurgent that makes the native population expendable. When the native population chooses to welcome the insurgent, then they put themselves at risk. I choose to attack the Taliban economicly and biologically. The things that frighten me here are concepts such as "kill 50 as long as we get 1 terrorist" and "make war on those who uphold Sharia Law." These fly against the basic freedoms America espouses. If we sell our soul in this war, what will we sell tomorrow? The first line confuses me. It is far more than theoretical. It is real and it is practiced with brutal results - especially for women. It also advocates a different financial system - no interest on loans. Talk about a conflict of values. The entire western concept of loaning money from banks is not accepted. I certainly have no answers but ideally Sharia law is broken down as an accepted form of rule. Maybe if women were to gain equal political power in the middle east that would help.

The development of the Catholic Church's stance on lending at interest is fascinating. In truth, I think the bishops still don't quite know what to do with it. The complexities and subtleties of the modern system have not made that examination any easier.

That is the reality. If you are going to use drones to kill the bad guys there will be collateral damage. We are never going to win this war as long as our enemy is willing to blow themselves and everyone around them up in the name of Allah. How do you fight people with that mindset? They have absolutely no regard for human life as long as it helps their cause.
