Top 10 1A Programs

Featured Replies

I use my eyeballs, my friend. They're local. I've seen them. I'm just saying that if there aren't 10 better programs than them then A is not competitive.

Maybe they're top 10. You guys would know that better than me. That doesn't change my argument.

Who are they not competitive with?

Who are they not competitive with?

Short answer is "good teams."

That's blunt but IMO it is the truth.

That's the most ridiculous thing I have read on here in quite a while. That's saying something because I read every post that UK#1FAn writes.

And the answer to your question is YES, it does mean they don't get in these rankings.

The only ridiculous thing here was your post.

Lexington Christian was in Class A from 2007-10, which is in the time frame that VOR is referencing.

Besides, Class A now is different that Class A was from 2007-10 because of the 32-team limit. We're comparing red apples and green apples, at the very least.

Yea, but give me the 1A teams they are not competitive with. We are comparing them with 1A programs at this point. Give me the head to head results, then the mythical results of the Top 10 teams that you don't think they would be competitive with. And for argument sake, give the 1A teams that are not in the Top 10 that should take Bellevue's place.

Call it what you want. It is "ridiculous" to insert a program that is not a Class 1A program currently. Its a ranking of current 1A programs based on history. What you are trying to do is a different ranking

Just for Giggles, since you brought it up. Where would they be?

Yes and as soon as Mayfield or Hazard get to the point they can be number one, we'll change the critieria and use all-time records and number of Championships :D

Seriously VOR, geat summary.

Actually I think Mayfield will be 2A by that time.

Yes, but depending on how the numbers are moved around, it's likely the BW will move with them.

That would be very interesting. Anyone know off hand what BW's high school enrollment numbers are?

According to the last KHSAA enrollment report put out, Beechwood was # 33 and Mayfield #35, and NCC #34.. So, it's feasible that Mayfield and Beechwood could move up and NCC move down. But, if the last enrollment report is an indicator, Crittenden Co and Ft Knox would be the 2 schools that would move down.

As far as this thread topic goes, I have no problem with it, but, I would think head to head would be just as good an indicator as playoff wins.. Mayfield holds a 4-1 advantage over the 2 programs ahead of them, with them averaging 30 pts a game compared to 11 for Hazard and Beechwood..

2009 Mayfield 38 Beechwood 0

2010 Mayfield 38 Beechwood 14 ... Mayfield 47 Hazard 6

2011 Mayfield 19 Beechwood 14 ... Hazard 24 Mayfield 6

Since LCA is not allowed to be counted, then that makes Mayfield champion in 2009, so, based off these stats, I say the Cardinals are clearly #1.. :walk:

Can you imagine how strong 2a would be adding Beechwood and Mayfield... I'm sure the 1a teams would gladly swap those 2 for Ft Knox and Crittenden Co... I doubt Murray, OB Catholic, NCC, Cov HCross and a few others would like it very much...

Good and interesting work by VOR. One problem I have (or one change I would make) is counting playoff victories. A (like many) is so bad at the bottom that I wouldn't credit a team in this category until the third round. The first two are often against bad teams.

VOR, does that change anything in your rankings if you go that route?

Short answer, no that won't change anything.

Long answer, so you are asking what teams have made it to semi-state the past five years. A third round win puts you in the final four. That seems a rather high standard for any class. We know the top 4 are very strong so requiring a third round win doesn't help decide the rest of the top 10. Lexington Christian owned a lot of those missing final four spots and 3rd round playoff wins so that skews the numbers. The only school outside the top 4 with a third round playoff win in the past five years is Pikeville. Here are your final four each of the past 5 years listed from champion, runner up to semi-finalists:

2011 - Hazard, Mayfield, Beechwood, Pikeville

2010 - Mayfield, Lexington Christian, Beechwood, Hazard

2009 - Lexington Christian, Mayfield, Beechwood, Hazard

2008 - Beechwood, Hazard, Lexington Christian, Crittenden County

2007 - Beechwood, Lexington Christian, Hazard, Frankfort

If we just eliminate the first round playoff wins and give credit for second round wins, it doesn't change the rankings much. It would still look like this (playoff wins minus first round):

1. Beechwood (14)

2. Hazard (14)

3. Mayfield (12)

4. Frankfort (5)

5. Pikeville (5)

6. Holy Cross (3)

7. Raceland (2)

8. Fairview (2)

9. Williamsburg (1)

10. Bellevue (1)

Perhaps Bellevue and Williamsburg flip flop because we give Bellevue extra credit for being the only school on the list outside the top 4 with a playoff win over the top 4 (2009 over Frankfort).

You're making a different argument than me.

Bellevue may indeed by the #10 team. I'll trust VOR and others on that. That's not my point.

I understand, but for the sake of the argument, we have to prove that Bellevue is in fact the number 10 team. Plus, if there is, in fact, competition for the number 10 spot that would debunk your "lack of competition" argument. For instance, Russellville could, and should, be in the argument for the number 10 spot. Who else?

Lastly, on the other thread, in reference to Bellevue:

Here's the last 10 games vs Beechwood

2012 - 49-20 Beechwood

2011 - 63-8 Beechwood

2010 - 52-7 Beechwood & 63-7 Beechwood

2009 - 20-8 Beechwood & 41-20 Beechwood

2008 - 48-0 Beechwood

2007 - 35-2 Beechwood & 48-14 Beechwood

2006 - 62-8 Beechwood

That's 10 wins to 0.. Avg points for Beechwood 48.1 ... Avg points for Bellevue 9.4 ... Avg margin of victory 38.7 points ...

I did the same thing for Dayton and Ludlow... Beechwood vs Dayton since 2006, 7-0 record for Beechwood, avg margin is 49.7 points to 3.4 points.. Vs Ludlow, 8-0 record fpr Beechwood, Avg margin is 53.9 points to 5.9 points

Total vs all 3, 25 wins 0 losses, with an average score of 52 points to 7... I think these facts prove my point...

I understand, but for the sake of the argument, we have to prove that Bellevue is in fact the number 10 team. Plus, if there is, in fact, competition for the number 10 spot that would debunk your "lack of competition" argument. If you believe that Bellevue is even in the conversation for #10 or anywhere near it my point stands. It doesn't matter who else they are competing with. I have a baseline of their level of talent. Any team that is considered around them or in competition for #10 is irrelevant to the point I'm making.

Do you think Bellevue deserves to be anywhere near #10?
