What is wrong with the Ryle Offense?

Featured Replies

We have all seen it the last few weeks. Ryle has had trouble getting their offense started and keeping it going? If you were the coach how would you fix it?

I would say play calling.

It's time that coaches start to work with what they have instead of sticking to the same scheme no matter what players you have. That has been the biggest mistakes coaches have always had throughout the history of the game. Some are very good at adjusting to the talent they have and just as good at masking their weaknesses with the players they have.

Unfortunately for Ryle I think there are no adjustments being made, at least not big enough adjustments being made when it comes to the players they have. I remember after the week 1 thumping and the success they had with their first win they were saying how they changed their offense up and it was more of a run up the middle offense now. Well in reality that was the way it's always been. It showed when they played Colerain, I didn't notice any difference in their offenisve philosophy at all, they still run the ball 90% of the time and it still fails to produce anything.

With the O-Line they have they should be able to throw the ball a lot more and spread the defense. They have the athletes that can catch the ball and are plenty fast enough to make things happen in open space, yet they don't have a QB capable of doing that. (That is no knock on Nathan Davis, so before the bashing posts come out towards me I am only stating what has already been proven.) With an athlete like Davis, and I've said it before, he should be used differently on offense such as a receiver etc. Their offense problems I place squarely on the coaching for not using the athletes they have in the right situations. They need to start spreading the ball around and it would do wonders to a stagnant offense. Which brings me back to my original point. The Coaches need to adjust their scheme instead of sticking with the same ole same ole. They don't have a Travis Elliot this year so why act like they do?

Against SK Davis had no time to throw the ball Ryle's line is not very good.

Ryle did change their offense from the spread to more of an I-formation. For the Henry Clay game and the Colerain game they tried to go up the middle instead of spreading it out. It was not a balanced approach. Against SK they tried a combination of sets, none of which worked effectively. Most of the passing plays should have been timing routes and the QB held the ball WAY TOO LONG (That is no knock on Nathan Davis, so before the bashing posts come out towards me I am only stating what has already been proven.) for the play to be successful. Instead of throwing it to the receiver, he tucked the ball and ran. He did not give his receiver a chance to make a play on the ball. The offensive line blocked and held their man but the QB has to get the pass off. Even if his receiver is covered, throw the ball and let your receiver go get the ball; instead the QB tucked the ball and ran or took a sack. He had time to complete the pass. Is this their only QB? I would rather see him at FB or TB. At this rate, it is going to be a long year for Ryle. I am in agreement with Hellbird. Where is the speed that they spoke about at the begining of the season? Where is the QB that played at Dixie last year? Ryle's O Line is huge....is this coaching or playing?

The problem is, even though Ryle may have lined up in the spread offense at the beginning against Cooper, their offensive play calling didn't change at all. Wether you line up in the spread or not, when you run the ball using the same 3-4 plays the entire game. I don't consider that changing the game plan.

When they played the spread then they should of played with an offensive scheme of a balanced offense, they didn't. They were still primarily a running team. If they weren't succesful running the ball in the spread offensive formation then they sure wouldn't be succesful running it out of a running formation because the running formation ends up putting more defensive players in the box. So they are bound to fail in that formation if they weren't succesful running the ball in the spread.

You hit on the point i've noticed the last 2 years with their QB and that is no knock on Davis, but he really isn't a true QB and they would be better maybe going in another direction with someone who can spread the ball around more.

What I have seen I would say its there line . They are big,but that dont make them good!

This has been said for years and yet nothing has changed(exept the names), the staff for what ever reason fails to see what has been obvious to most of us. Coach to your talent not to your scheme

Unfortunetly Ryle will have to endure yet another season of what if's.....

Could not have said it better myself!

Then spread out the defense and run draw plays and screens to slow down the pass rush. Throw short passes and get rid of the ball quickly. Roll the QB out to a side. Help the O line out with play calling and formations.

This yr's Ryle SR's beat Highlands when they were Freshman Just goes to show you how much better some coaches are at not only developing talent but also keeping kids interested. I got this from another thread. I think it says it best. Qryche11 hit the nail on the head.

How many kids from that Freshman team are still playing at Ryle as Seniors? Based upon what I saw last year I would say a decent number of good football players have decided to do something other than play football at Ryle. The sideline looked like a 1A or 2A sideline. Seemed like Ryle was having big problems getting players to come out for the team. Not sure if it has gotten better this year, but my guess based upon what I'm reading on BGP is no...

If true this is a huge problem at Ryle and the kind of thing that the powers that be in the school system need to take a hard look at.

Are there kids walking the halls that could help Ryle if Warner wasn't the head coach?? This is what I have been told by a friend of mine who had a senior football player last year..:idunno: He has told me on numerous occassions a lot of the kids just don't like Bryson and don't want to play for him..:idunno:

My kid does not go to Ryle, but has some of his best friends that go there and you are correct. There in fact is a great player who goes the that isn't playing this year because of the coaching. He was a great defensive player and a great TE. He is only playing baseball there now and is a great pitcher, but he was just as good at football and would of been a big asset to the team.

Unfortunately that is the case at a lot of schools. Coaches and players may not always be on the same page and some players get turned off with the politics etc.

The kid I'm talking about was an annual fixture on the all star teams every year in the pee wee league and would also go down to Louisville each year with my boy and some other fixtures on those teams to compete in the tournament down there each year. He was also a key member of the Boone All-star team when our boys were in 8th grade that went and beat the kenton/campbell all star team at SK 4 years ago. HE is a great player and is not the only one that opted out of playing football at Ryle.
