Shelby Valley 91 David School 6

As far as this game and the score...I agree with everyone else, it is sad. The score should NEVER be like this....after a team is 50+ ahead, then they should let their freshman play. :

Yeah yet East Ridge beat David School by 84 points in their meeting...That's so much more sportsmanship than the 85 that Shelby Valley beat them...

The most unfortunate part is that the KHSAA saw fit to make the David School part of a three team district, while making the 57th District a five team district.

If you are going to whine about the 57th, be accurate. David is part of a 4 team district.

I can understand a team being in a position where they beat a team by 80+ points. If you've never played them, you bring your varsity, start them, and play them the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, you bring in your weakest five players, pack your defense into a 2-3 zone, and run your normal offense. If the other team is so weak that they cannot stop your five weakest players, then the score is going to be ugly. I fully understand that.

My problem with this game is that they had already played once this year. The coach KNEW that the David School team wasn't competitive with even his subs, or his JV. In my opinion, in the second game, he should have started his freshmen and made adjustments from there. I don't expect him to play sixth graders just to make it close, but the freshmen should have gotten all the minutes they could stand, and take a 30-35 point win.

Just my two cents' worth.

Three schools have played the David School at least twice so far this year.

Shelby Valley won 102 - 17 and 91 - 6.

Buckhorn won 84 - 19 and 95 - 20.

Rose Hill won 95 - 15, 82 - 41, and 81 - 39.

Shelby Valley and Buckhorn both should have done something differently the second time they played. I don't have much respect for these two teams.

Rose Hill obviously changed their game plan the second and third times around. They were still blowouts, but they were still more respectable.

2 questions (for someone that was at this game) before I comment on this one.

1. How long did the starters actually play?

2. If the press was used, how long?

Starters Cade Riddle and Jeremey Jackson didn't even play in this game....To my understanding the starters played the first quarter and that's all...They used a full court man to man in the 1st and that was it...Two 8th graders played a lot of minutes in this game from Dorton...A couple from Virgie would have played but they had a game of their own...That's about all I know...

Then what else was Valley suppose to do then uh? It's an unfortunate mismatch that David asked for by playing a varsity schedule.

Your clueless, plain and simple

Then why don't you clue me in brother, throw me a freakin bone, lets hear your wisdom on the situation... :flame:

From these scores, it is painfully obvious that Tim Fraley (Rose Hill's coach) understood that he needed to modify his game plan on the second and third games, in an effort to minimize the damage. I know that in the later two games, he had at least one (and I believe two) seventh graders on the floor.

I'll take Fraley and the lessons he taught in those last two games.

You don't know is much about sportsmenship as you probably think you do! You don't accidentlly score 91 points. Don't you think that they could of at least slowed down, hold the ball, actually work on moving the ball in a half court set, there are other aspects to the game other than scoring. I mean come on, they could of done whatever they wanted in the half court. If they worked the clock for 2 minutes or longer in a offensive set don't you think the score would of been more respectable. There is no defense for that score because you can slow the game down, nobody was going to gain from this game anyway, so why not hold the ball. By the way, have you ever heard of respect your oppenent? :flame:

By the way stark, 2 minutes in a possesion, 32 minute game, 16 possesion, even if they scored three every time thats 48 points. Its not logical to think that every possesion will be exactly 2 minutes, and there will obviosly be points scored in transition, but I think you can see the point here. They could of done whatever they wanted in this game and they choose to embarass and run up the score.

I agree with Frances....this was the first time that ER had played the team, so I can kinda understand how it could've happened.

BUT I agree with you as well....Coach May should've played the kids that don't usually have any time on the floor after ER was that far ahead!!!

It makes NO sense to bash a team who is just starting out, and unfortunately doesn't stand a chance. They will learn real sportsmanship if compassion is showed to them on occasion.

So they press in the first quarter/half....WHY??? They knew that David wasn't going to beat them. You answered my question about the coach, AD and the "boys" on the team. You don't beat someone that bad by accident....

My hat is off to the Coach, AD and the "Men" from Rose Hill, as they understand "the game" far better than those from Shelby Valley ever will.

I can only pray that those in Shelby Valley never have children with the problems that those at David do......

BTW can you see the difference between the "boys" of Shelby Valley and the "MEN" of Rose Hill. Men show respect, while boys, well they will always be boys for the rest of their lives...... How sad for the want of beating a team.......

Sounds like you're blaming the players. Why do so? They're not calling their own plays, after all.

But they are the ones on the floor playing.......

Have you ever seen the movie "Hoosiers"? Do you remember when the Huskers Coach in the last seconds of the Championship game called a play that the players didn't quite like? What happened? From what I can tell from the score from those games, the "Boys" sure didn't mind beating David that bad at all. The "Boys" could have become "Men" that second night and suggested to the Coach that what he wanted just wasn't right and if the coach gave them a hard time about it, then if I were a parent I would have given a call to the board of education of Shelby Valley to ask them if they knew what the word sportmenship meant.

I'm certainly not going to try an defend Shelby, East Ridge, Buckhorn, or any of the others who are chosing to run up the score of this program; as anyone who knows the least bit about basketball, knows you can design an offense to hold down the score somewhat in this situation. Those in charge of the schools in question, should be ashamed of themselves; and hopefully all will get the chance to someday "have the shoe on the other foot"!!

My questions, as I'm unfamilar with the David School are:

1. Why would they chose to play a varsity schedule with a team that sounds uncompetitive with an average freshman program? Why not start with a JV or "club" schedule until your program matures?

2. What are the "problems" the players at DS have?

3. Why would anyone actually press a team like this, for even a possession??

4. How large a school is David and why don't they play other weaker programs around the state, similar to some of the other small academies, etc.?
