A fun question regarding Covington Catholic & Highlands

Featured Replies

I know they're not great, but doesn't Harrison County still play football?

I would imagine if Holmes didn't want to move up they would be put in an expanded district?

During the last realignment, teams weren't allowed to play up. If that's the case again, Highlands would also be placed in an expanded district.

I added 3a in there, because I wanted to see how people would rank these 2 in comparison to Central. Looks like everyone feels Highlands would be ahead, a little more questionable between CC and Central.

Most feel Highlands would be #1 or #2 in 5a, either just ahead or about equal with BGreen. That's a pretty tough call, either way and I can see reasons for either. It's interesting some think CCath would be #2 right behind BGreen in 5a, then others say as low as #4 and I'm assuming that's being put behind John Hardin and WCentral, maybe Franklin Co.?

In 6a, I was curious if people felt Highlands would be ahead of St X. I already knew they wouldn't place them above Trinity. CCath would be #3 at best, according to all people who picked, but, would they go ahead of Scott Co and some of the other Louisville schools?

With these things in mind, let's just ask the obvious questions:

Who wins these games? Assume on a neutral field..

Central vs Cov Cath

J.Hardin vs Cov Cath

BGreen vs Cov Cath

WCentral vs Cov Cath

Scott Co vs Cov Cath

Franklin Co vs Cov Cath

PRP vs Cov Cath

BGreen vs Highlands

JHardin vs Highlands

WCentral vs Highlands

St X vs Highlands

This should be fun...

MHS-it's common for the person starting the thread to state his ideas. How would you rank them in each class and how do you see these matchup's results?

Not so sure about CC over Scott Co with 'no question'. Scott County can play.

Yes they were. You've got bad scoop.

Then they had a really, really bad night against Highlands. I was more impressed with Louisville Western than I was with Scott County. Seriously.

I am pretty sure that the state did not allow move ups or downs.

I know of no team that was moved up.

Central vs Cov Cath-CovCath

J.Hardin vs Cov Cath-CovCath

BGreen vs Cov Cath-BG

WCentral vs Cov Cath-WC

Scott Co vs Cov Cath-CovCath

Franklin Co vs Cov Cath-CovCath

PRP vs Cov Cath-don't know enough

BGreen vs Highlands-BG

JHardin vs Highlands-Highlands

WCentral vs Highlands-Highlands

St X vs Highlands-Highlands

I hear ya! But I was at the HHS/SC game and they didn't appear to be a very good team at all. They definitely had a few gamebreaker athletes, but they didn't impress me as a team. I know they scored in the 30's, but outside of a kickoff return and a blown coverage by hhs that left a reciever wide open, I don't think SC had a first down in the first half. It was very ugly! I just think CC is pretty good and would not struggle at all with CC. But just my opinion.

Honestly, I think Highlands would go 2-2, losing to BGreen and ST X and beating JHardin and WCentral..

I think CCath would go 3-4, beating PRP, Scott Co and Franklin Co and losing to Central, JHardin, BGreen and WCentral..

Initial topic, I'd rank Highlands 3rd in 6a, 2nd in 5a and 1st in 3a..

I'd rank Cov Cath 3rd in 6a, 4th in 5a and 2nd in 3a..

Nope, they weren't. Well, yes, they were, but, not for a competitive reason. It had everything to do with geography and not leaving a district with less than 4 teams. If CCath has to move to 5a because of enrollment, that leaves the current district with 4 teams, including Highlands. So, although from a geographic standpoint, it would make sense, the KHSAA isn't going to leave any district with 3 teams. If Highlands is allowed to move up, it'll be because another team from the same geographic area happens to fall down a class or has to move up a class due to enrollment.

Russell was the only one.

If Pendleton Co drops football and CCH moves up, that leaves only HHS, Harrison Co and Holmes. Obviously if PC doesn't drop football the district would stay how it is.

I sure thought schools were allowed to request a move up. Either that or my memory went to Hades in a handbasket since I remember voting on requests. Heck, I remember a certain northeastern school twisting in the wind trying to convince us that if it moved up to 5A, it would travel less miles (it wouldn't); then that if we considered the boys in their alternative school, they'd be 5A (we couldn't because they had previously set up their alternative school so that it would have a separate school designation number in an attempt to be a 4A school when Highlands and CovCath were in 5A); and when that also failed, to have legislation proposed that would have prevented the KHSAA from putting a school in a classification if a district game was more than a certain number of miles away (the proposed legislation went no where fast).

Fact is, competitive reasons have never been a reason why the KHSAA allowed a school to move up. Years ago, any school could move up for any reason it wanted. Then the KHSAA banned all move ups for quite some time. When we did, starting with the re-classification for the 07 season, again start allowing schools to request a move up, it has always only been for geographical reasons.

To the point about Highlands specifically, I agree with you that it's pretty unlikely that Highlands would be allowed to move up if CovCath goes to 5A unless enough other schools move around class wise or district wise resulting in it being a two team northern Kentucky 4A district (Highlands and Holmes) and Holmes can relatively easily be placed in another 4A district without objection (for example into District 4 in Louisville).
