NKY softball legend passes away

Featured Replies

Heard some sad news today. Mark Pompilio passed away. The layout is Friday @ Radel funeral home in Newport Friday 5-8. There will also be a service Saturday @ 10:00.

If you played softball in NKY you have probably played for or against POMP. Fun guy, loved life and the game of softball. I'd love to know any stats on how many games, tourneys, world championships he won.

Prayers go out to his family!

Oh man ! What a character! Always loved hanging around him at the ballfield. Had some tough battles with his teams in the early 90's. RIP, Pomp...

The Softball City Hall of Fame inductions this saturday will not be the same without Pomp. Had the pleasure of playing for him and he was quite the character on and off the field. Ironically, Pomp was responsible for tagging me with the name "LAWNBOY".As I was telling someone tonight, if we had a camera at his "palacial Newport estate" when we had some legendary card games it would be a instant reality TV series success. One title that Pomp won, and that I was a part of, was the 1991 NSA Majors Indoor World Series in O'Fallon, Ill. There was no one who loved the game of softball more than Pomp. RIP "Pomp".

pomp was known for his rosters. We always said his roster was a white pages and a pocket full of quarters. He once called my house to ask my brother to play. He was not home so he asked me if I played. I said yes so he recruited me, it ended up being the finals of a league tourney. I later played many a game against his teams. He also could hit back in the day. Blew one thru my legs one day when I was on the mound.

Never carried quarters, he always carried a wad of cash that could "choke a goat". It was a C-note followed a 50 or two and then a bunch of 10's & 20's and then about 40 or 50 singles. After God made Pomp he throw away the mold.

This is a picture of the 1st class of HOF inductions from two years ago. Pomp is seated, L to R 5th one down, Between Mike LaFever and Red Moore. Boy this was a cast of characters for back in the day. Sorry, Butch Hayes got chopped of in my picture.

A legend for sure. And a character would be a massive understatement. Tony and I are good friends and I know he appreciates all the support he's been given during this time. I'll be sure he knows this is on here.

For those that don't know, and I don't know how that would be b/c Pomp knows EVERYONE, Tony is a 9th region basketball official.

Ran into Red Moore yesterday at the store and he told me about POMP. I was shocked, played softball against him many times when I coached and played for Waldo Peppers. He was a great guy and fun to talk with in between games. RIP POMP. JD

He was truly a softball legend in NKY. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. RIP my friend.

Lawnboy: Can you tell us some of the other folks in that picture?

I recognize a few.

Jeff Trame, Chuckie Johns

Herb Blick - back row, yellow shirt, Highlands hat - pretty sure he would be inducted as an umpire

Tim Barker 2nd row 4th from left, face's all familiar just can not remember all names. JD

Looks like cheeseball chuckle Johns back left. Coach Mike Belew next to him. BB Brian Neihaus is in the red shirt. Chicken man is wearing the chicken hat. One of the Dixon boys is in far right corner in blue and orange. This was the first class they inducted. They had a lot of coaches, umps and founders. It was a very nice event. I'm hearing there is another induction this weekend?

Who is being inducted this weekend? I would hope that Bob Gesenhues, Tim Nickell and Timmy "Beerwolf" Barth would be in one of these next few classes.

Just recently heard about this weekend. Picked up a few names but not all of them. Moonie and Bruce Martin, Chris Burkhart and Chris Garnett are the names I have heard. I haven't got my call yet:madman:
