Okay, you caught me. I've been living a lie for lo these many years. I've been saving money on the athletic budget at the Home for Wayward Matrons, by cutting corners on some of the equipment.

 

I would ask that you not mention this to the rest of the girls, as some of the darker secrets might come out.

 

You see, our entire set of Jarts are really the ball joint for hip replacements that have been taken out of some of the older patients. I've been grinding them down to a point, and gluing on the fins. I do believe we have the only set of Jarts that are made completely from surgical steel...

 

I've been using the bottom of the urns from the cremated members to replace the lost pucks on our shuffleboard set. They make a metallic sound as they slide down the concrete runway, but no one seems to have picked up on it yet.

 

Maybe worst of all, I've been forced to use some of the colostomy bags for the bases on the softball diamond. They were working great, until that young hussy Irene Baker (she's been married twice!) got those new metal cleats from her great granddaughter for her 88th birthday last summer. She's quite the flirt, and it would make you sick to watch the men "coo" over her when she laces those spikes up. Anyway, we were in the fifth inning of the championship game last August, when Irene laced a frozen rope over the head of Celeste Roberts' in left center. Sure enough, it turns into a "bang-bang" play at third base:

"Here comes the throw from the outfield, and Baker is really wheeling around second..."

"Imelda Johnstone cuts the throw, wheels, and fires a strike to the corner of the bag, where Chloe Davidson is waiting..."

"Baker tosses the walker to the side, she's coming in HOT ..."

"The throw... the catch .... the slide .... the tag ......"

 

"And the umpire is covered in something brown ...."

 

"What in the world is going on out there???"

 

"She's ....... SAFE!!!"

 

Heck of a play, but I got a call that evening from the assigning secretary, saying that we would probably have to call our own games from this point on.

 

Tough day to be wearing blue, but at least we won the game!!!!

Ashland and Paducah Tilghman are the two winningest high school basketball programs in the state of Kentucky.

 

At the end of the 1996-97 basketball season:

 

Paducah Tilghman’s record was 1,472 – 615 for a win percentage of 70.5%

Ashland’s record was 1,572 - 645 – 1 for a win percentage of 70.9%

 

Ashland had 100 more wins than Tilghman.

 

 

From the 1997-1998 season through January 19, 2006:

 

Ashland has compiled a record of 170 – 86 for a win percentage of 66.4%

Paducah has compiled a record of 199 – 72 for a win percentage of 73.4%

 

 

As of January 19, 2006:

 

Ashland’s all-time record was 1,742 – 731 – 1

Paducah’s all-time record was 1,671 – 687

 

Over the past 8.5 seasons, Paducah has closed the gap by 29 wins for a current margin of 71 overall wins.

 

At this pace Paducah could catch Ashland in 23 seasons, meaning that sometime around March of 2029:

 

Paducah’s record will be 2,212 – 874 for an overall win percentage of 71.7%

Ashland’s record will be 2,212 – 970 – 1 for an overall win percentage of 69.5%

I’ll be as old as my dad, who happens to be out playing 18 holes of golf with my son right now, so I’d say my chances of being around are pretty good… :lol:

 

Stats are my thing, and if you know where to look, and what to look for, you could do the same thing yourself in about 15 minutes.

 

You started this thread looking for answers. I responded by providing stats that Flynn has done better than any coach in the region during his tenure, which he has. But, I didn't look at the bigger (outside of the region...) picture. When I realized that Paducah had actually gained ground on Ashland during that time, I began to better understand the reasons for your concern.

 

The crazy thing is that for eight seasons prior to this one, Ashland didn't have an off year, much less a losing season. Over the previous eight full seasons, the Tomcats have amassed a 21-10 season average, and still Paducah gained 21 wins overall.

 

My projections of Paducah catching the Tomcats by the year 2029 are not just based upon the trend of this season alone, (5-10 prior to Fleming County) or even this season and last season, (22-24 prior to Fleming County) I am crunching numbers for the past 8.5 seasons. (170-86 for Ashland vs. 199-72 for Paducah.)

 

With the Cats out a big man, and up against a tougher schedule, you've surrendered 8 more wins overall to Paducah so far this season alone. If the current trend of this season were the guide, Paducah would catch the Cats no later than 2013.

 

What all this boils down to is a bunch of math and statistics that simply validate that you do have reasons to be concerned, and something needs to be done to stop the slide, or you will witness Paducah catching and passing your Cats, sometime during your lifetime.

Last State Title in the 60's and last State Championship game in 1996, and they lost! The Tomcats need to get back to the way they were. I'd like to see Tomcat Dynasty NOT tarnihsed tradition!!

Sounds to me Net that living in the past is exactly what is going on. Alot of things have changed. Demographics, facilities, coaching, kids, parents, how we do things etc. Getting back to the dynasty......yes we all want our teams to win especially those steeped in tradition. But the fact is things change. And did anyone ever think it is not the coaches fault that the kid quit. It might be the parent who cant deal with the fact that the kid won't be a star or doesn't get the playing time they think is correct. There are so many factors today that coaches and educators must deal with for the pay that most of us who had the kind of scrutiny of our jobs like they do could not handle it.

Good point!! :thumb: But other schools seem to fair well with these same problems!

 

Another sort of unseen factor is that Ashland is sort of like UK, they usually get every teams' best game because of their rich tradition! And since they don't have the teams that they once did, or since parity now exists, the image of Ashland basketball's tradition has eroded somewhat. Teams don't feel intimadted by the Tomcats anymore!

I dont understand how this happens every year to Ashland. I was talking to a coach from another school a few weeks ago, and he asked me how the future looked for us, and i responded by saying our freshmen bunch is very strong this year(15-2 without Bonner) and he said yeah but Ashland ALWAYS has a good freshmen team. I guess this is the first time i've ever realized that but he's right. Take this year's junior class for example, they went 15-4 as freshmen, won the AIT and RIT while playing without Thomas and Mcdavid. How does this kind of drop off always occur at Ashland between these years??

If you watched Jeff Kovach play for Paul Patterson then you should be used to scores in the fifties.

You may be right, but my recollection was that Kevin Ward was the up and coming player at Putnam instead of Jeff and I thought Ward was the starter. I also recall as sophomores that Harkins was a starter and Kovach played virtually none at all. Then Kovach grew from something like 6'3" to 6'7" and immediately became a star on Harkins level as a Junior. I recall Jeff just went from being one of the guys and pretty much became an All State caliber player over a 12 month stretch. He was perfect for the Patterson system. Perhaps the phrase late bloomer should be replaced by sudden bloomer. Regardless, he became a super player and was a great guy also.
