For every 10 possible coaches that might be a step up, there are easily 100 that would be a step down.

I was waiting on that type of response! Haha. I agree about the stup/step down thing. There are VERY few coaches I would trade Flynn for.

I find it humorous that many of you are wondering about the abilities of Mike Flynn.

There is no greater ambassador in Kentucky High School basketball than Mike Flynn.

He won at Warren Central, he won at Covington Holmes, and he has won at Ashland. One of the few coaches to win a region title at 3 different schools.

He has won practically playing a myriad of styles, offensviely and defensively.

He is one of the best practice and prep coaches in the state. Solid X and O guy.

He cares about his kids and he cares about the game of basketball.

For the players that quit...I say you can stick your hand in a bucket of water and swish it around for two hours and not a drop will come out...we can play with you or we can play without you, but we would like to have you.

Has it ever crossed the minds of TomCat fans that Ashland just doesn't have the depth of talent that it used to?

If the fans run off Flynn it will be their loss...

There are definitely "things going on in the program" as you put it, and it is natural to look at the high school head coach first, but upon fair examination, I really don't think your seach should end there. I could tell you a number of things that need attention, but then I run the risk that you guys might actually listen and do them, and that would just make things tougher on my guys in future seasons...

Sounds like a bunch of dissatified ex-players...Todays players want one thing...playing time, and it better be more than the younger kids on the team get! Sounds like that's the case at Ashland. Players don't nessarily play for coaches anymore... it's all about PT.....

One of the worst things to happen to Ashland basketball(and other sports) is when Verity Middle School was established in place of two junior high schools(Coles and Putnam-of course, Coles was superior to Putnam but that is a whole other thread :sssh: ) With two junior highs there were easily 30 kids were developing and participating in the two programs. Many times the "late bloomers" stayed in the program because of opportunity and when their time came they were ready to compete. Now those late bloomers are likely giving up as early as middle school because they haven't developed yet or lack of opportunity due to the "early bloomers" or "AAU professionals". The classic example of this is Jeff Kovach. If I recall correctly, Jeff didn't start at Putnam as a Freshman but was able to participate until he grew and developed. By his junior year he became a star under Coach Patterson and went on to become All State and a Ky Indiana All Star. It was nobodys fault, but when Ashland lost the 2 junior highs the playing filed was really leveled.

Excellent post, ACE, and I agree completely. The effects of that are also felt in all of the other sports, including football.

Great post ACE. :thumb: And I'll add one more thing. Many of us who graduated in a previous decade(won't say which one) played all sports. I graduated from a smaller school in our region and played football, basketball, ran track and played baseball. There were probably 6 or 7 of us in school that did this. Granted, a small school offers more opportunity to do this due to sheer lack of numbers. But talking to the Superintendent where I graduated, he stated that they had no one who has played all sports for many years. My point is that even though kids may be able to play multiple sports, it seems that they don't by choice and may have nothing to do with the coaching staff. It seems they want to have a "life". Seems that when I was in school sports was life. Times...they are a-changin'.
