I think I'd prefer to wait. I think I'd let him come up in Sept and see how he does against first rate pitching. I think we can get a good gauge on how he translates to this level in Sept. I'd hate to burn a year if he's really what the Reds need at the top of the lineup if he's gonna sit and watch the post season waiting on an opportunity to pinch run. Besides, you know Dusty is gonna give the old man and spidermonkey every opportunity.

About Service Time

Major League Service Time measures how many days a player has spent on a major league roster. Service Time is used to calculate the timing of various steps through a player's career. Service time is commonly presented in years.days, which means a player with two years and 34 days of service time would read: 2.034.

 

Accumulating Service Time

A player accumulates service time for every day he is on the 25-man roster, on the 15-day or 60-day disabled lists, or on the suspended list. A player can only get one year of service time per season. A year of service time is 172 days, although a major league season typically goes longer than 172 days. The major league season is calculated from the first day of the major league regular season to the last day of the major league regular season. Whether a team plays a game on either day is irrelevant.

 

A player only starts accumulating service time once he reports to his team. If a player is called up on a Thursday, and reports to the team on Friday, he starts collecting service time starting on Friday. If a player is traded, he resumes collecting service time once he reports to his new team. If a player is released, he collects service time through the day he is released, but not after that date. If a player spends less than 20 days on optional assignment in the minors in a season, he gets credit for a full year of service time.

 

Important Service Time Milestones

 

A player with at least 3.000 years of service time is eligible for arbitration, with the exception of Super Two status players.

Whoops you are right. Late last night when I looked at it, he had an ERA over 6 for this month. I didn't know they hadn't put last nights game into the stats yet for ESPN's stats. So his ERA for this month is now 5.64. In June he had an ERA of 6, so it would have been two out of the last 3 months but I didn't know they hadn't included that game yet. He still has one more start in August so it could get above 6, however I hope it doesnt because that means he would have had a bad start.

With all things equal, if Homer is going good, and if Leake is going good and you had to choose between the two, if you can't see that Homer has the much better stuff, well, there's no point in arguing and you should probably start rooting for the Pirates.

 

The only time Leake should touch the field in the playoffs is as DH in the WS.

 

You all make it seem like Homer has been this amazing pitcher, and Leake has been terrible. Yet as people like to point out when it comes to the numbers its really not that different. So how is it possible that Leake is very close to Homer in every area, since Homer has so much better stuff? Is it because he sometimes doesn't have the composure to consistently do it? No doubt Homer's stuff is much better, I can't argue that. However placement of a pitch also matters, and Leake does do that better. Which is why even with not as good of stuff Leake after a horrible start of the season has basically came close to having the same if not better numbers than Homer in areas. If I knew Homer would be able to use the great stuff he has, and hit his spots in a playoff game and keep his composure without having one of his big innings, then I would agree. I know I admit it is close, but I would chose Leake over him because trust him more in a big game over Homer.

My point, Leake is not in front of Arroyo and Homer. Maybe one, but not both, IMO. Of course, that's providing they roll with a 3 man. And, we all admitted that Bailey must throw like he did last night to be our choice. 3 more outings like that out of Homer and it's not close.

You helping my point, it would be Leake. I wouldn't trust Homer to be able in a playoff game to keep him composure to do that. Homer has gotten much better each year when it comes to keep his composure and not having that huge inning that really killed him in the past. However with it being a playoff game and being the biggest game he probably pitched in since high school, I don't trust him to be able to do it. I think Leake would have a better chance of keeping his composure. Would Leake probably pitch a shutout no, however I would like his chances of keeping a team to 3 runs or less in a playoff game than Homer. Homer being able to keep his composure in a big game like the playoffs is the only reason why I pick Leake. Homer had a great start yesterday in kind of a playoff atmosphere, so I definitely was happy to see that. I may change my mind by October because each game in September will become bigger games, and he may change my opinion on that.

I agree with you when it comes to Arroyo. Arroyo has been in the playoffs and has done it before, I trust him in a playoff game. It's not that I don't like Homer, I am thrilled to see him having a season like he is having and showing more composure than he ever has. I just question if he can still keep that composure he has shown most of the season, when it comes to the playoffs. Since it will be the biggest games he has pitched in since high school. I am not saying he wouldn't, because if he does start I sure hope he does. At the moment I still trust Leake more to be able to handle that type of environment.
