Score was tight until mid way through the 3rd quarter. NCC had no answer for Vories or Simpson. Highlands got much better looks at the basket, NCC struggled on offense against the pressure defense. NCC had trouble scoring. Highlands was ahead by 12 with under a minute, when I left. Willie has those boys playing smart basketball. They keep their heads, always seem to run a good motion offense and inbound plays. They screen very well for each other.

If I didn't have a player to stop penetration by Vories, I'd go zone. I saw nothing in the CCH game to make me think HHS shoots well from the perimeter. Why let Vories consistently beat you?

Vories sets up the Highlands offense very well. When not shooting he draws attention so others can.

 

NCC hit that 3rd quarter wall after leading by 2 after the first, and trailing by 2 at the half. Still don't have the stamina to finish games and you have to wonder if they can string 3 or more games together back to back in the All-A.

 

Highland's defense was probably the difference as they did a good job out front and enough inside. Plus going for the second night in a row you have to give them credit. Highlands goes a little deeper than NCC who goes 8 deep but mainly use 6 unless in foul trouble. Plus Highlands players know what their roles are very well.

 

Kiernan fouled out and was in some foul trouble all night. The end of the second quarter had a lot of people from both teams on the bench as the game was a tad rough.

 

Speaking of.......add Guigduli to the ever-growing list of chest stompers. He did it right in front of the ref and was T'd up for it. Worse than Latteners not quite as good as Marcus Vick. Refs handled it as best they could without ejecting him and Schralman yanked him out for a good period.

 

Good crowd, good cheering sections, good JV game (NCC won 46-32 and Highlands JV coach needs to observe Coach Schlarman more), only some minor slipping on the floor, and not a basketball clinic, but a fun game.

I am very impressed by the Highlands coaches. Especially Willie. He does a great job of keeping the players focused.

Same coach as last year. Does a good job. There was improvement as the boys matured and gained experience. These boys have 2 plus years now of varsity experience. They should be more disciplined and focused. 'Which is the difference in the close games they lost last year and the games they are winning this year.

I'll be curious to see if others agree with your description. If so, I'm wondering what exactly it would take for an ejection.

 

Sounds like "a good period" may not be enough of a "punishment" by Willie.

Looked from my perspective that the NCC player tried to hold onto Guidugli. Guidugli got a little upset. Ref said he stepped on him. Ben said he didn't. Thought the calls were a little lopsided in the 2nd half. I think NCC was just about in the bonus before they got a foul called on them. Seemed like NCC's big guys got away with a lot under the HHS basket. I thought Guesenhues was more out of control tonight than BG. But he didn't get a T?? Also curious as to why NCC Coach didn't get a T for storming the ref on the court. Supposedly was trying to call a timeout, what a joke.

How long will Schlarman put up with Guidugli's actions? That's 2 T's in the last 2 games, is it not?

Thought the calls were a little lopsided in the 2nd half. I think NCC was just about in the bonus before they got a foul called on them. Calls were lopsided in the second half because Highlands was actually playing pressure defense which results in fouls, while NCC was slow to the ball and was letting Highlands get open looks at the basket.

 

BTW, stepping on a player would be a foul, stomping is a technical and the ref got correct.

Two coaches scouting were sitting by me. One said, "I don't think it counts as an official game if he (Ben G.) doesn't get a T each night".

Appeared to me the NCC coach and his staff were asking for a technical foul on Ben G for slapping the backboard when he was attempting to block the made shot. Not sure if there is any HS rule which would mandate that, but that seemed to be their initial reaction.

 

Regardless, 3-5' on the court and all the way down to the baseline in a hurry toward the ref will often result in a Technical.

 

Why were there 3 officials tonight? Is that something the teams can ask for? The 3rd official was one of the 2 officials from the JV game.
