July 1, 201214 yr If we are going to compare the 2 (Votto and BP) then that might explain it right there. Votto, is respected in other MLB cities for how he plays, and how he carries himself. Phillips, not so much. Therefore, concerning votes from other cities (perhaps even votes in Cincy) one gets more votes than the other. Perhaps those that do not like BP, voted for the next 2B in line as a hope that BP wouldn't have enough votes make the team. The old thought, our guys doesn't deserve it, but lets make sure this guy don't get it either. The All-Star game is a popularity contest. From what I have seen, most Reds fans love BP (I am not included) so why wouldn't they vote for BP, if they infact voted?

July 1, 201214 yr Personal past history should have nothing to do with it. You take the best players. How much of this falls on BP's hotdogging style? He is not a popular player amongst other teams. If the other players had voted him in this would not be an issue. Custom definitely should have been on the team. Let me ask you this, however: If Baker were in LaRussa's place and the pitchers were Carpenter and Cueto and Carpenter had the better numbers do you think he would pick him, or his own guy with 10 wins and very good overall numbers? LRCW, do you think anything I said above could have played into it?

If they didn't have a problem with it they would pitch their ace in relief when needed 2 days later, and just treat it as a bullpen session.

A new rule has been instituted that keeps pitchers from pitching at the All-Star game if they pitch the Sunday before. That eliminates Justin Verlander, James Shields, Felix Hernandez, and Dan Haren from the active roster for the AL in the All-Star Game.
