Not sure deserve is the right word. I just think he has a way to get the best out of his basketball players sort of like Coach Moore did over the years but he has done this with females so whether he could do that with males remains to be seen. Thacker was involved the boys game for a number of years at three different schools before getting into the girls game at the request of a former superintendent whose daughter just happened to be on the team. I remember laughing when the superintendent hired a janitor to drive him from girls practice to the boys games so he would get to be on the bench by the time the varsity game started so he must know a little something. As far as this job in particular it appears he is not the choice of the administration at the current time with the time line of the job appearing to be pushed into the month of July. By the time July rolls around Thacker will be calling plays with the Flyer Football team and watching his oldest daughter play middle school hoops so life goes on and the pool of quality candidates for the boys job at FCHS shrinks.

I would think there would be quite a bit of interest in this job. Franklin Co has a solid tradition that I would think would appeal to many coaches.

Tony Wise would be a great choice. Used to coach at Frankfort so he knows the area and is a proven coach regardless of what happened at MC.

I think the talk of good coaches not being able to cross over is ridiculous. Based on my experience teaching and preparing players to play the game are the same. Both have teenage issues to deal with just different subject matter. If coach Thacker wants to make the jump, his time with building the girls program should be more than enough. That is why he deserves it.

 

As far as Coach Wise goes, he needs to understand that a high school program does not start with the freshman.Just because you bring up middle schoolers does not signal involvement.

And he does understand that. He had already talked to the new middle school principal about the middle school program. Some things happened at the middle school that Tony did not have any control over. The 8th grade coach that took the team to the final four of the Bluegrass Conference for the first time since 1999 was fired. And the 7th grade coach that made it to the championship game quit to finish his degree. This took place during the summer between Coach Griesser's last year and Coach Wise's hiring. People were already put in place without any input from Tony.

No problem being corrected, Mcraycraft. If he attended some practices and games that is a big change from his time at Frankfort and that is a good sign.

How about Daniel Griffith? Former Greenup standout who has done a great job as an asst to Scott Hundley at Woodford County. Young and energetic.

I agree. Hundley seems to really value his opinion. Followed them all year and really liked The way they coached together. He played college ball at Shawnee State and brings all sorts of knowledge to the YellowJackets. Look for him to get some serious consideration.

I would say hes in the same league as Barton when it comes to this job. Good jv coach but no Varsity experience. Have to get experience sometime though right.

If Coach Thacker is interested (big IF??), he would be a strong candidate because he has built a strong, competitive women's program by working hard and doing it right. Has built a strong connection to the middle school program, cultivates good support from the booster club/community, has good discipline, gets top effort from his players.....and of course the bottom line....his teams have been winning!!

 

He has also been very successful in helping several of his players get scholarships to some of the smaller colleges in KY. Several players that would not have been able to do it on their own, or even attend college without that financial help. Many of his players have come back to the area and helped out as assistant coaches, so he obviously enjoys a great amount of respect from his players.

 

He also is an assistant football coach (don't know how he has time for family??), so his contact with the male athletes has been strong. I could go on, but the bottom line is he would be a strong candidate if he is interested.

Everyone does realize the advantage of building a relationship with the middle school lies in Girls basketball because in central KY the MS girls play in the fall. Varsity coaches with one middle school feeder can actually coach Middle school in the fall and high school in the spring. It is a very nice set up for the girls.

There is some good young talent in the program that will have to be developed, and a very good athlete in Ryan Timmons returning as a senior. I think it is in question If Timmons will play basketball as football is his

#1 sport. The college that signs him may not want him to play basketball. There will be other returning players with experience that will need big time attitude adjustments. For a coach that is willing to get in there and work this could be a real good job in the long term. Booster support was never in question under Chalk. He got everything he requested and then some. Again in my opinion the biggest challenge will be changing some player attitudes that Chalk had difficulty dealing with.
