March 21, 201214 yr Author I said when this first came out that it was much to do about nothing. I didn't really read what had happened but my stance was the bounty thing has gone on a long time. I also said my mentality playing safety was that if you catch a ball over the middle or get stood up/cut back I'm going to try to knock you out of the game and physically intemidate you. Ronnie Lott was my favorite player and who I always wanted to play like. To me that's a defensive mentality. The problem after reading more about this one is that it's the first time they have directly caught a coach up in the mix. Players had made bets with each other in the past but this time the coach got caught red handed. Where it got really bad for the Saints is that they have emails etc of Payton etc trying to cover it all up. Godell has a good/bad reputation of being bigger than the game at times. I think what you have to step back and look at is this also ties in with all the concussion craze going on the last couple of years. They are now speculating there will be numerous lawsuits coming out of this. About positive it's what ruined Brett Favre on an int hit. If so a guy like him lost millions although I heard he said you got to be tough it's part of the game. Not sure on that though. I do think this is just the start of it and you will see guys like Vilma and even guys on other teams handed out suspensions. The example has definatly been set! Payton also lost 7 million! That's A LOT of coing! To bad for the Saints. Top 4 team in the league that is now in big trouble. Don't forget they are still trying to work on Brees's deal. That will be interesting!

There's a difference between "sissyfying" a league and making sure that people aren't intentionally trying to injure other players. Which is what the Saints were doing.

Not kids. Men. Your son has no place in this discussion. 2. I don't coach football anyways. 3. Football is a dangerous game. You know the risks when the pads are put on. I want to see guys hit each other and I want to see them hit each other hard. These men are paid large sums of money to inflict these hits and to avoid these hits. They know the risks when they put the pads on. Period. Football...no...the NFL is a sport of some of the greatest athletes in the world trying to kill or be killed. For me to be concerned about the safety of any NFL player is the oxymoron of oxymorons. Illegal hits or not. I really don't care. Play ball or come to my house crack a beer so we can watch grown men try to kill each other. That's what the NFL is to me. Why wouldn't a defense player have that mentality is the question I have. I'm gonna hit you as hard as I can but I sure hope I don't hurt you too bad, sweetie....wouldn't want you to get up and keep defeating my team like you have been. Yeah, makes a lot of sense.

March 22, 201214 yr I actually agree with you. The bounties didn't make them hit anyone any harder or any different. Now if they could prove there were dirty hits/late hits that were just obvious then it's a different story. I think anyone who believes at least some illegal hits didn't occur because of the bounty system is being naive.

Those who think this isn't a big deal are crazy. The suspensions handed down are enough evidence that it's a huge deal. Payton and crew made it worse by ignoring those above them who told them to stop. They deserve the punishment for being morons.

I honestly have never cheered for an injured player. The funny thing is, some former Saints defensive players are members of groups trying to make the NFL a "safer" game :lol:.

No. Of course not. Am I saddened when it happens? No. Not really. Not in the NFL. Football is a dangerous game. If I played a game where I know people have been concussed so much they develop Alzheimer's, paralyzed, unable to walk at 42 years old because my back has been battered(Earl Campbell) or suffer from dementia by 50 then those are risks I take. You talk about people intentionally trying to hurt one another when on every single play 300 pound men line up and hit each other on the line of scrimmage with the force of a car wreck. This has been documented. And they do this repeatedly throughout the game. Say...35-50 plays(car wrecks) a game these guys are punishing each other for a guy carrying the ball can get 3 yards on 3rd and 2. The whole thing of player safety is such a contradiction. Ridiculous. Who's saving the big guys? And in a game with all of this violence I am supposed to be surprised and shocked and demand punishment when a defense like the Saints has a culture out to destroy the offense? Forgive me, I don't know what I am supposed to be bothered with here. These guys are modern day gladiators. Intentional or not somebody is going to get hurt. Bounty programs or not people will get hurt. Some career ending. A lot of these men's lives will never be the same because they chose to play in the NFL. Bounty program or not. To me a defensive players 'bounty' is his paycheck.

At this point the only thing better than the NFL over the NBA is fantasy football. IMO. The NFL. Where one of the greatest coaches can't win the Super Bowl unless he videotapes the opposing team's practice. The NFL. Where defenders get fined if he hits the receiver before he catches the ball and the receiver is ruled 'defenseless'. The NFL. Where the QB is protected to the point that if a defender slaps the QB's helmet(intentionally or not) while trying to sack the QB then the defender is flagged. The NFL. Where a defender can hit a receiver with his shoulder and it still be deemed helmet to helmet and the defender will be fined.
