Hard to believe they built a gym with that capacity in 1962 and it is still one of the best high school gyms in the state.

Wesley is a nice player, I remember him from back in the days when he played AAU with the Louisville Suns.

Built in 1962 so I'd say 50 years would be correct. You can sense the history in that place. Too bad they decided to get rid of the old scoreboard at center court.

 

I have sort of mixed feelings of the old scoreboard. When it was the ONLY scoreboard in the building, it caused too many problems for the players. Can't tell you how many steals I saw at mid-court when guards were trying to play for the last shot of a quarter, and had to look up at the ceiling to see where the game clock was at. (I think in the past 10 years or so, didn't they have secondary scoreboards that at least had the game time on it, that were mounted on the walls?)

 

Was kind of surprised when I went in this year, to see both of those previous scoreboards gone, and two new ones in place.

 

The thing that really was different, was the horn. Don't know where they got that!

Interesting, Roy Winchester was at the SK GC game last week. Talked to him for a bit. He said gym is 49 years old but has been used in 50 8th Region Tourneys, the longest streak in KY HS B-ball. It would have been interesting to hear the chatter among the school board back then; let's build a 5500 seat gym in a fairly rurual area; pretty good thinking on someone's part. By far, the best atmosphere of any gym I've been to; like how they left the stage for Mr. Winchester and the Deputies to still sit on during the game.

If the two teams that lost in last night's semis had won, they may have been turning away people tonight.

Charles Hurt was in the house last night to be inducted into the 8th Region Hall Of Fame. Former coach Bobby Simpson was also honored.
