Regular Season Wrap-up

Top Teams Leverage Different Styles

The top 2 teams in in the rankings have used to completely different formulas to achieve their success this year. When looking at Scott County’s individual statistics you see no super-start, no super standout statistically. Save one – junior Cooper Robb, who has 11 interceptions this season. They say defense wins championships – Mr. Robb has given the Cardinals a spark on the defensive side of the ball this season.

For the Lafayette Generals senior and UK-commit Walker Wood has been the dynamo providing power to the Generals offensive cannons. Prior to this week’s games Wood had over 2,000 yards passing with 20 TD tosses. Rushing Wood had just under 1,000 yards and 18 rushing TDs. Those sound like Mr. Football numbers. For his favorite target receiving Wood hit senior Quinton Brown for over 700 yards and 7 TDs.

Madison Central used defense and the arm Zach Hardin to secure their spot in the rankings. Hardin has over 1,300 yards passing with 18 TDs this season.

2A Gives Central Kentucky Best Chance at State Championship

Lexington Christian ends the season with a perfect 10-0 record. Eagle leaders this season have been – Dillion Wheat at running back with over 1,200 yards and 20 TDs; Brayden Miller at quarterback with over 1,600 yards and 20 TD passes; and Lebryk Caelan at receiver with over 500 yards and 8 TDs. And here is the bad news for other 2A opponents of the Eagles. These guys are all only juniors.

The Admirals of Danville have posted a strong 8-2 season. Much of the Admiral’s firepower has come from their senior aircraft carrier quarterback Zach Dampier. Dampier has over 2,200 yards passing with 28 TD strikes. Rushing is led by junior Donlevy Harris with over 900 yards and 13 TDs.

3A – When It Matters

Traditional power schools Lexington Catholic and Boyle County played tough early schedules and faced district opponents, Western Hills and Garrard County, who has compiled strong records going into district play. But its district games that determine the seeding and how you do against your own class. The Rebels showed they were not just rebuilding this year and the Knights maybe the favorites to repeat as 3A West Champions. Just do not look at their 5-5 and 6-4 records.

WanDale Robinson of Western Hills has passed for over 1,500 yards and at least 22 TD passes this season.

Casey County has an outstanding year. The only blemish coming in the district game against Corbin. The Rebels end 8-1, with on game cancelled due to weather. Senior Breece Hayes carried the Rebels offensively with over 2,000 yards passing with 21 TDs and over 400 yards rushing.

4A, 5A, 1A – Repeats, New Comers and Old Faces

In 5A Madison Southern repeats as District Champions. The Eagles won their first district championship last year. In 4A, East Jessamine Jaguars won their first District Championship. And Bourbon County finished strong to win their district.

In 1A Nicholas County finishes 9-1. Senior Zach Richards has led the Blue Jackets in rushing with over 1,100 yards and 11 TDs, thus far.
