Volleyball is Queen in NKY and Soccer is a close 2nd, if not 1st state wide....both especially at NDA as they are pushing state titles year in and year out. The NDA softball team, and most NKY/KY softball teams, do not have the best, if any, athletes in the school playing softball. Coaches have these girls convinced they HAVE TO play a sport year round to reach college - this may be true for varsity level players. However, this philosophy is being pushed down to 4th, 5th and 6th grade and parents are buying into this crap. They all think their daughters will be the next varsity star and college scholarship when the reality is that only a small percentage make it...and that's if they don't get injured. So they give up softball in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades and only play rec because it fits into their other sports schedule. Ultimately, they do not develop their softball skills in the most important development years because they play those other sports year round. One coach cannot change that social acceptance and brainwashing....it can only be changed by the school administration and in the message they send.

From what I've heard, she is not allowed to play varsity per her parents.

To add to Clyde's analysis: 1) No seniors 2) No athletes 3) All pitchers (4) are 8th graders = walks, walks, walks 4) 4 coaches in 5 years 5) Very little money and support as it relates to the other NDA sports Their coach has started summer teams in the high school and junior high feeder schools. It will take them a few years to catch up with the Boone County schools. Their coach turned Villa baseball into a consistant winner before leaving...softball not necessarily the same as baseball but if NDA ever had a chance to have a winning program, they have the right coach build the program and do it.

In fact, all 17 runs were with 2 outs and unearned if NDA could catch anything that resembled an infield or routine fly, much less a ground ball in the left side of the IF. Saw the whole game while waiting for Simon Kenton and Perkins. Bishop is good, but your facts need to get better.

There's a lot more to coaching than just going to a class and getting certified, or knowing one or more parts of the game.

NDA does have a frosh team and the feeder schools have a fastpitch team in every grade (at least Pius and BS). That is not by mistake...the head coach is promoting fast pitch from ground up.

Another reality is that most HS in NKY just made the jump to fast pitch in the last 5 years because they held on to slow pitch until KHSAA made them switch.

The Boone County league is average at best. Boone, and especially Conner and Ryle are built around that league and the better players are recruited to play for the NKY Xplosion. As long as the volleyball and soccer coaches, or the perception is out there, say that all varsity players must play club nothing in NKY will change. Volleyball is Queen and softball will continue to suffer in numbers and talent.

Agree, the coach leans on his best player and I realize she is ONLY a freddy, which is astonishing and makes her upside so unbelievable. But, the best players find a way to make their team better and they need to have confidence in them. In the 4th quarter at the NDA game, even though the coach put the ball in her hands, he cannot make decisions for her. Teams collapse the lane against her which leaves both blocks and the wing open for clean looks to the basket. She needs to distribute the ball - better odds on an open shot than playing 1 vs. 5. Learning this will make her a better all round player.

I agree, they are certainly to be commended and praised for their accomplishments. My whole point is that if you have the talent then use it, don't hold them back. Playing a weaker schedule for the wins vs. pushing them to maximize their potential against better and more talented teams outside the conference is a disservice to the players. I think a 20-5 team (year end and year out) that plays a weak schedule but never makes the regions (until this year) is disappointing to the players when compared to the same team that might finish the regular season as a .500 team but makes the region because of the stiffer competition throughout the season. I guess it depends on what your goals are.

Gould shut down Ammerman most of the game. When HC played as a team and moved the ball around, they found open shots for Beal and Gould. They hit a lot of three pointers. Entering the 4th with a 9 point lead, HC should have won this one, but the reverted back to Beal ball only at the end. She handled the ball completely and took all the shots in the 4th quarter, let ND back in the game. Credit the entire ND team for a great comeback and Jourdan Rahschulte for great defense in the 4th. Other than Ammerman, both teams are young, so this great matchup should repeat the next few years.

Villa has had talented teams in the past, but they never compete in the Districts and All A because they play a weak schedule. Their players are never use to the uptempo and quickness of the game that the bigger schools play at. They should play the bigger schools to improve in the regular season vs. padding their record against all the small schools north of Lexington.
