  1. There is a blizzard outside... go further indoors. In fact, head for the congressional bunkers under the hills of West (by god) Virginia!!! But to be serious, the problem is not the weather or what drills to do, the problem is keeping the kids interested (as you already know). Make it fun... don't make it a "drill" or an "exercise". There were some good posts on how to keep it fun, yet fundamental (pun intended). Good luck to all the coaches during this period... that's why you make the big bucks. JK, LOL
  2. How does "your" school "feel" about kids playing more than one sport?
  3. 3/4's of March is winter... let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Snow in October/early November is disturbing... can't get a good footing.
  4. Best I can tell, he went from 5'10" as a frosh to 6'4" as a soph (don't know current stats as a junior). The big ol' wagon is here, the Chuck is coming. Nothing but elbows and knees coming at the batter.
  5. Are they paid too much or not enough? Depends on their agenda. If the HS coach is approaching it like a career and HS is just a stepping stone to the next level, then he/she should not feel like they are taken advantage of and they need to pay their dues like the rest of the working world. In this situation, consider yourself a co-op and assume your experience is part or your payment. If you're looking for the big pay-off at the next level then you have to take the big pay-less to get there. It's not different in any job. Now, If you are there for the love of the kids and the love of the game (not the the career coach does not feel the same on this matter) and have a different career, and teach them what you know and are looking for no other reward, then you are under paid by any economic measure. That is in no way to place one agneda on top of another, as both are needed and respected! I would like to extend a thank you to every coach that took time out of their day to teach my kid something... underpaid, never-paid, over-paid... thanks!
  6. Your pick based on where your heart is... Ryle Simon Kenton Newcath Beechwood HHS CCH Never been to a scimmage, but how do the Beechies stack up against Birds every year?
  7. Watch for AJ "Chuck Wagon" Smith for the Beechies this year.
  8. Any kid on their respective small school team. Due to the low numbers, some kids had to play above their head so they could contribute to the program when they were in the 7th and 8th grades.... even at the V level.
  9. Keep it the same. Kids will go where they (or their parents) want to go. I'm not up on all of the under the table money issues. If a particular school has an attribute that attracts the kid/parent, for whatever reason, then send him/her there. They must have a HS education to get to college. To keep them interested in HS is not soo bad IMO. Sports are over for most after HS. Now, some of this has to rest on the shoulders of the schools that are the "have nots". I think public schools need to a take a look at themselves and ask how can we be more like the private schools that are doing so well. Why are kids leaving our school? Is it the facilities, the staff, the location, or the administration, etc? Perhaps the private schools try harder to attract students because they don't have student population that must attend their school. Maybe private schools run more like a business and public schools could do the same. It seems like Beechwood and Highlands in NKY (public schools) have figured this out and have created a system that parents go to extremes to send their kids to for the education and athletics. I think a lot of this come from the surrounding community and alumni as well. But no school district culture is cast in stone. Who will be next to make a change? In NKY it could be Newport. Already an independent school system in place and now there is push for new home construction and revitalization of the community... who knows? I think there is lot that needs to be examined or else one rule will lead to another, and another, and another....
  10. The Tolly-Ho burger hits the spot after midnight.
  11. Perhaps many "bingo gamblers" are not casino gamblers... maybe for some it is just a fun way to pass the time hang out with friends and contribute to the school, the church or the civic club, etc.??? I don't know too many people that bring a pocket full of $ingles to local church/school festival to brake the bank, but maybe I'm wrong. If the casinos start serving warm beer, burnt dogs, serve cotton candy and bring in carnival rides rides for the kids, then the charities will not have a competitive advantage and will die out
  12. You're right. My kid was 12, and he paid the price every time he made a tackle on Mr Alford in the NKYFL.
  13. If it is the same kid, I got him at 18 in Oct 08. None the less, I wish the kid luck. I just hope he's done before my kid has to go up against him again. The fact that he is at HHS, started late or not, he is getting a good education.
  14. How old is Travis Alford? Is this the same Alford that played for Newport Fire Fighters seniors 2-1/2 years ago? If it is the same Alford I think my kid played against him in NKYFL 2-1/2 years ago when Alford was 15. If so that would make him 18 (?) now as a sophomore. Just curious, how old are HS sophomores? Kid was a great athlete.
  15. How about giving all those who do not have a state championship ring, a state championship ring? Is that where this is heading? Because, all colleges with all of the outlandish recruiting efforts, are still not on the same level as others; even with ever stiffening recruiting rules. Beyond that, the NFL teams are far from equal even with a draft, and trades and whatever else goes on there. The are soooooooo many factors. If you think a simple multiplier effect will work, and if it does, I will ask that you run for president, and as president of this fine country, find a multiplier effect to fix health care.
  16. So, in Frankfort the county will not release funds...that is a shame. IMO it is not right. If you send your kid to a public school your tuition is tax deductible in the form of real estate taxes. Send you kid to a private school and the tuition is not tax deductible, but you do get a tax deduction for paying for another kids tuition (real estate taxes that you pay). I guess they are priviledged and do not need an additional tax break Now, send your kid to an independent school that is funded in part by the tax rolls, then they should release the money to the school district. Theory being that it costs money to educate a kid. If that kid is in a school system running, in part, off of the tax rolls, then they should release the money to follow the expense. So if the expense is not incurred in this/her public school district, then the money should be released to the independent school district that is incurring the cost to educate the kid.
  17. Good point, but I didn't forget; remember from my previous post that the state kicks-in additional money from the seek formula (about $7K per student at BHS per the '05/'06 seek funding report...this is public information). Plus, just as when you bought your home, you had a mortgage over many years (15 to 30)... school districts generally have to do the same thing through bond issues.
  18. Just jumped in, so I don't know if you are talking about M. Simpson from SK...., if so... If I could screw my kid's head on Simpson's body... he would be playing D1 next year. Simpson is a physical stud, lets see how well he takes a hit. Not a knock, but as a kid (NKYFL) he did not like getting hit. But, he did put big hits on the defense... my bet for the next level... DB.
  19. No, but close. After OSU falls to LSU and they go 0-9 against the SEC, I think Moeller may be able to pick up Tressel. What's up with Ohio tapping into KY HS coaching talent???
  20. #1 Very true, but if you are going to BHS, then pay $6,000... one way or another or move into Ft. M. If the county does not pay.... the parents do. #2 Simple math, 1 child = $6,000 X 500 kids = $3.0 million For how many years???? That's $3. million year after year after year. So, if the same 500 kids attend for 4 years... $12 million bucks.. bodda-bing!!! Year after year, with salaries and admin costs... I think you could build a school building. Heck the private school have been doing it... yes they get contributions also..... I should do a seminar on this stuff. Come to think of it, why these schools do not have an additional 500 out of district students is beyond me. Someone needs to talk to them.
  21. All dollars given to a school district are based on the seek formula in Kentucky. In short, funding is provided by some formula... I say this, it reminds me of the BCS bowl bids.. it does not make sense. However, to go back your Holmes HS comment... Holmes gets over $13,000 PER STUDENT from the state and BHS gets about $7000 per student (actually BHS is the next to last in state funding). If you want to know what your school got in 2006, I can tell you. Now if BHS (or other independent school) could get 500 kids from out of district at say $6000 per kid... which would be broken down as 1/2 from the parent and 1/2 from the county. Well now that's $1.5 million per year from the parent(s) and $1.5 million from the county for a total of $3.0 million per year! In that case.. just like a private school... they do not need the state for the extra 500 kids.
  22. #1 (IMO) They all have the same chance. We're talking about kids going to private schools here. To get a "free" education at CCH or NCC or St. X... where do you move to? To get a "free" education at BHS (or HHS for that matter... although higher rent) move into the city. Collinsworth would have a chance if he had good grades and tested well. BHS's accepting out of district kids is not a luxury. With all of the new construction in Ft. M the school is full at many grade levels. So, if you are committed to your child and think that BHS is the right choice, and he/she can keep up (that means that the parent(s) have to help them with homework, if needed) then move to Ft. M. or work more jobs to pay the tuiton (satire). #2 The "starts in the home" thing is way too big to resolve on BGP. see # 3 #3 I didn't think that you were. The tuition hurdle and/or entrance exam hurdle are hurdles... only to those see them as hurdles. After watcing my mother in action... I can't help, but to go back to ... It all starts in the home, because that's really where this is heading.
