Yes, Fairview and Rose Hill both have very young but excellent teams coming back next year.

He did have some players around him, Martin being the best in my opinion, but I don't believe his supporting cast was as good as what Vanhoose and McDavid had around them.

Oh, so since the award did not go to Vanhoose it had nothing to do with Daniel's great year, it had to be something personal that the voters had against Vanhoose, McDavid or one of the other outstanding senior players in our region, right? People, Matthew Daniel year in and year out has been outstanding the last 3-4 years and this year was excellent especially in light of the lack of a great supporting cast. McDavid had Thomas and Wilcox; Vanhoose had Gill, Blair and Robinson. Daniel had no players as good as those on his team. To think that he got this award for something personal the voters may have had against another team or player is a little reach.

Well, if it is a basketball award and has nothing to do with academics then the voters felt that Matthew Daniel was the best choice as a basketball player. Vanhoose, McDavid and some others had great years but the people "in the know" decided that Daniel's year was better.

^ Would be a great idea since so many parents seem to as of late make these kids stay back a year for sports instead of grades, social developement or maturity issues.

JBS should be proud of their effort and making it to the tournament. They have what, 74 kids in the high school? Wow. Team GPA of 3.5 also. Seems like they have their heads in the right place and maybe they can make another trip next year.

I may or may not be a better person than him, you will never know and that is fine with me. I don't hate him, I just think that he is going to be, at the rate he is going and the actions he is taking, a negative person on and off of the court. You think what you want, I will do the same and I will leave the snappy icons off of here since there are not any that relate to what I would like to say.

It is easy for me to have so many posts about the perfect one, OJ Mayo, he is such a wealth of potential subjects to talk about on here. Yeah, I have many "jones" with him; I love the way that he makes everything about him above his team, how he has multiple suspensions, hangs out with wonderful drug users/dealers and I agree that the end of his high school career was perfect; getting "t'd" up at the end of the game was perfect for someone like him. :banana: :dancingpa :ylsuper:

Wow, so much thought on such a simple subject. I don't know whether to be impressed with this post or depressed that so much time was spent on researching something that requires such little provoking thought and/ or time.

All three are good players, no doubt. But the coaches, and I am not sure who else may vote on this, picked Matthew Daniel. I am just glad that this is an award that the coaches get to vote on, not just the media. I like to think that the coaches, who have to prepare for these players, know a lot more than the media does.

I can't figure out what the problem would be either. Here is a kid who has attended one high school, done a great job on and off of the court and has every intangible to win this award. I for one think the coaches made an outstanding choice. :ylsuper:

So when or if he becomes a millionaire then that makes showboating, egotistical arrogance alright? His days at Rose Hill had zero impact on me personally or any of the teams that I supported locally. But he did prove something to be true while he was there; he was pretty much a hired gun, going from school to school and looking out pretty much for himself first and team later. Not true?

No, I just don't understand why someone with such an obvious leap in talent would want to stay in a game that the outcome was already decided unless it was just to show up the other team. Hey, here is a radical thought? OJ, being such a great teammate, could have went out of the game and presented someone off the bench with a chance to play more at the end of the game. Then he could have been a class act on two fronts, to the other team and his own, and he would not have looked like an arrogant showboater.

I think that if he had asked to come out that the coach would have had no problem with that, anyone that watched any of the games could tell that the coach did not run that team. Yes, now he will not be playing with "boys", he will be moving on to play against people his own age finally. Oh, and I am not a teacher, not everyone on here is or has been one.

It may have been fun for the supporters of HHS to see Mayo still in the game with a 40 point lead but I doubt that the other team was very amused by it. Lack of class by OJ Mayo and the coaches that allowed him to still be in the game at that point. Win with class, lose with class. Why does a player like OJ Mayo, who everyone knows is an obvious talent, have to rub salt in the wounds of a team getting destroyed late in the game?

I think the coaches vote for this award, which if that is the case then they would be the ones proclaiming him player of the year over Vanhoose and McDavid. Daniel's stats are as good across the line as Vanhoose without benefit of as good a supporting cast. I applaude the coaches vote for him and am very happy for this well deserving young man.

He had a great year and outstanding career as well. On and off the court his stats stand up to anyone in the region.

He may not be here playing ball but I am sure that one way or another we will find his name on the pages of Bluegrasspreps.

Matthew Daniel of Rowan County was awarded player of the year and Mays of Elliott County was coach of the year. Matthew has quite a resume over the years and has excelled on and off the court, GPA of 4.1 not too bad. Of course Mays has coached Elliott to their first trip to the state tournament. I was slightly surprised at Daniel winning, not disappointed mind you, he is very deserving of this award. And Matthew is the third player from Rowan to win the award recently, with Stephen Kidd and Bryannt Furman being other recent winners. Great job.

No, I cannot walk on water, as far as I know Jesus was the only one to do that without props. And I am far from without sin, at least I admit that. But I can say that I know what is right and wrong conduct on a court and what he and his coaches allowed to happen at the end of that game was terrible sportsmanship and just another way for OJ Mayo to make it all about him and take away from his team mates. He never should have been in the game, a classier move would have been to take out the starter all at once, but this coach never had control this year so what would one expect in the closing moments of a runaway win. :thumb:

Some know the difference between winning with class and showing up the other team.

^ He does have a world of talent and it would be a shame to see him waste it by not getting a better grip on himself and those that he allows to be around him. And you are right about the people around him; there are too many around him that are looking out for their own interests and not his best interests at heart.

They did play a very good out of state schedule, no doubt about that. But I still don't think that HHS would have won the Sweet Sixteen.
