When you set your mind to keeping a secret, you do a dandy job Mama Bear! I have turned over every rock I could think of and scratched and clawed and finally THINK I know the news? I will not go into details because I wouldn't want to harm the process but this just goes to show how the community is coming together and what we can do if we work together. It is wonderful news and I am very thankful to not only the community but also the worker out in front that got this ball rolling! Go Black Bears!:dancingpa

:sssh: Mama Bear, I am still trying to figure out the great news you have. You have me stumped? Can you give us a little insight now or not?

Mama Bear, you are correct about the freshmen not reporting until Monday. However, they have worked with them from time to time throughout the summer and before school was out. Taking into consideration the summer workouts and weightlifting they have put their hands on around 30 or so freshmen. The first couple of weeks for varsity they are having roughly in the low 70's. When the freshmen report and all are together they have 97 on the roll. I am hopefull that maybe when school STARTS THAT THEY CAN EVEN JUMP THE NUMBERS FOR FRESHMEN TO AROUND 40 OR MORE. IT IS ALWAYS A STRUGGLE FOR PROGRAMS TO GET ALL FRESHMEN TOGETHER BECAUSE OF A LOT OF FACTORS. I DON'T KNOW LARKEY'S POLICY ON THIS BUT USUALLY COACHES ARE A LITTLE MORE UNDERSTANDING AS FAR AS FRESHMEN GO. THEY GET IN SCHOOL AND TALK TO OTHER KIDS AND FIND OUT THAT THE COACHES AREN'T GOING TO COOK THEM AND EAT THEM AND SOME FEARS ARE LAID TO REST AND HOPEFULLY A FEW MORE KIDS COME OUT. Looking at last years preview from the Harlan Daily, the numbers for the varsity look pretty doggone good. It seems they have most of the kids from the three schools from last year. Another factor to remember as far as numbers go, is that success breeds success. If Larkey and the crew can have a good year, look for the numbers to increase the following year.

I also took a peek the other day and things are going great so far. The kids are working hard and if this holds true then the sky is the limit. I understand as everyone does that they will be bumps in the road but Larkey has the controls and will right any wrongs and lay the foundation for a top notch program. Work, work, work will translate to wins. Clover Fork has some really good looking kids out there that are tough as nails. The Tri-cities also has some great athletes working hard. Every corner of the county will have kids who can play the game. Harlan County is coming together and it is going even better than I thought it would. As of today, Harlan County High has 97 kids FR. through SR. on the roll. Everyone knows that some kids are weeded out the first couple of weeks but hopefully we can hold somewhere close to 100 kids. As the program grows maybe we can even have more but we must remember Football isn't for everyone and some will fall as the intensity picks up. GO BLACK BEARS! Larkey is really working these kids hard but again we didn't expect anything less. Work, work, work BLACK BEARS! These kinds of numbers will give us the ability to field good freshmen teams and JV. teams which we all know will lead to a successful Varsity program in the future.:thumb: I got my numbers from the trainer of the Black Bears who was buying washing powder at the local market. He said he is spending several hours washing a day just to keep up with the kids. A great problem to have IMHO. :jump:

Being able to run is the name of the game no matter what you are playing.

I love it. Its now time to see who wants to play. I bet the one's who stay really want to be there. Like I said earlier, its all up to the men who strap it on. If they are men enough to hang, Larkey will have a team with unlimited possibilities. Let's do this guys. Go Black Bears! This is what it is all about!

Overall team speed went to Harlan County. Overall Harlan County had more athletes than any team down there. That is why I am saying, give Larkey some more time with these kids and they will only get better and its really up to the kids as to how good they want to be. Several kids stood out from each corner of the county but I will not name names because I will forget someone.

Corbin, Knox Central, Lynn Camp, Middlesboro, Pineville, Cumberland Gap Tn, Harlan County A , And Harlan County B.

I will be the one in Cardinal, black and White! lol

They did really well. Getting better and better each time out as Larkey has more and more time to work with them. They won their pool and got beat on the last play in the semifinals. IMHO they were clearly the best team down there and will continue to improve as they get more work. They improved 100times since the last time they were down at UNION. I see this team getting better with each week of work. People in Harlan County better get on board the Bear Train because this ride we are about to take could be something special.:dancingpa

I really hate that for you guys as much as I hated it for Harlan County. We both should of never been in that position. Hopefully, you guys can find another game this late in the contest and I am still wanting things to work out for the Bears but you just never know until the fat lady sings. This has been unreal to say the least. Good luck WV!

I just think more than not, he puts his best athlete at the QB position. Now this is all subjective and could be argued all day long on each team he has ever coached. Shawn Robbins was a dandy back, the best back on the team perhaps and maybe the best player but that doesn't always mean he was the best athlete? Our thoughts on an athlete could be different also.
