I'll say 5-5 regular season but much more discipline and intensity this season.

In the long run, pursuing her dream is far more important. The athletics are a supplement and sometimes provide a path with scholarships. But the education is the PRIZE! Good luck to Ellie and again, Congratulations on your appointment!

I think this supports the point that it is extremely difficult to do both. Both O'Conner and Tibbs were great athletes but neither played high end club volleyball and HS basketball at the same time. To excel and advance in volleyball, Tibbs would have needed the club experience to develop. O'Conner was able to develop through her club experience and continue her volleyball career at UK. But did not play HS basketball (much to her father's chagrin, I'm certain).

Not saying it can't be done, but it is rare. Your examples are excellent athletes but you're spanning 17 years or so to get 4 examples. Where did Tibbs play club volleyball? I'd add Stephanie Niemer St. Henry / UC / professional

Typically will have a couple clinics leading up to tryouts in November and December. Practices and tournaments start in January and run through end of June.

Club volleyball teams will typically practice 3 times / week (twice on weeknights and on Saturdays they don't have a tourney). Players will also participate in position specific training about once a week (setters, middle blockers, outside hitters, defense, etc.). Much of the position specific training is for an hour prior to scheduled team practice so still 3 days / week. A typical tournament schedule would have a team traveling about 2-3 weekends a month. This would be mostly regional travel (Louisville, Columbus, Indy, Chicago) but would also include major tournaments in Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Orlando, etc.

Some of this depends on the level of club ball being played. Someone playing high level open club volleyball (NKYVC Tsunami, Tri-State Elite Blue, Lexington Elite, KIVA, etc..) will be consumed by the practice time and tournament travel. Both the HS basketball and Club VBall seasons run concurrently so she would be missing numerous practices for both teams and have conflicts for games, especially on the weekends. Both teams will be counting on your commitment to be present for all practices and games. How does a basketball team go without their starting point guard or the volleyball team go without their setter? This puts the coaches in a quandary for setting team attendance rules and opens up the opportunity for resentment amongst teammates. If you can't commit fully to a team, you really shouldn't be on it. Not to mention that playing both sports at the same time can really wear down a body. That's twice the impact on a player's joints and muscles and that can certainly lead to injuries. In most cases, the players at the elite Volleyball clubs are playing because they have designs on playing in college. I've seen it done, rarely, by some athletes, but both teams suffer for it. Someone playing a lower level club volleyball or playing on a "regional" type team with much less travel could probably make it work. The volleyball expectations and travel are not as demanding at that level.

Nope. Last time we played ND we handled them pretty easily. And I do know quite a bit about the program. They've been successful because they get the best players with the best experience and background, it's just that simple. You pretty much made my point as well. There is not parent drama in every sport at every school. It mostly occurs where there is a greater sense of entitlement. Parents need to support and stay out of the coach's and AD's office. That doesn't happen at ND. Especially when their daughter doesn't make the all tournament team.

Clay was a fierce competitor both as a player and as a coach. He always wanted to get the most from himself and then later from his players. He dedicated his career to education, both teaching and as the principal at Holy Cross HS. There are many sacrifices made to make such a life long commitment in the parochial school system. I have always admired Clay for his service at Holy Cross. Clay was a very good man and I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

Why in the world is Ryle playing St. Pat?

Fortunately, much of the mommy drama graduates this year. I'm not sure Brianna would be ready for the issues associated with the Notre Dame program. She'll do great at Brossart and be much more appreciated there.

Or you could wait 20 years, look back and say "Gee, we should have built the football field". The bishop is committed to a parochial school accessible to students living in Newport. NCC isn't going anywhere.

Ray Gabbard was a great man that gave many years of service to high school athletics. He was a high school basketball referee for about 30 years and then worked for years after as an evaluator, helping young officials improve. Northern Kentucky HS athletics was lucky to have a man like Ray. He will be missed by many.

slapping or vibrating the backboard is never basket interference. It can be a technical foul as outlined above but never basket interference. The goal is never counted as a result of slapping the backboard.

Pendleton County did this a few years ago as well. It allowed them to choose their schedule and get a program off the ground without getting pummeled in district play. I think in the right circumstances, this can be a good idea and even save a program.

I'll tell you what was embarrassing - The HC parent in the stands berating the players when they were warming up after halftime. He was loud, obnoxious and out of line. This HC team is having just the season they were expected to have. They strap the pads on every week knowing what is in store. The numbers are down and they are young. Parents need to leave them alone and let them grow. That loudmouth was embarrassing to the kids and the program!
